FH: Hofstra Tops UMass Lowell On De Wolf's Second Half Goal

Hempstead, NY – Freshman Philine de Wolf tallied the game-winning goal and added an assist to lead the Hofstra Field Hockey team to a 3-2 victory over the River Hawks of UMass Lowell in the Pride's home opener at the Hofstra Field Hockey Stadium Sunday.

Hofstra bounced back from the season opening loss at Lafayette on Friday to even its record at 1-1. The River Hawks, who posted a win over Colgate in their season opener, are also 1-1 on the young season.

The Pride jumped out to a 2-0 lead on goals four minutes apart as junior Madison Sauve notched her first of the season, off a pass from de Wolf, following a scramble in front. Hofstra freshman Frankie O'Brien notched her first collegiate goal at the 19:14 mark off a pass from graduate-student Marloes Schavemaker following a penalty corner.

UMass Lowell tied the game on back-to-back goals by sophomore Anouk Lalande, the second just 1:09 before halftime. The big play in the first half may have been the penalty stroke stop by Hofstra goalie senior Carys Swan on UML's Clara Defourt in the 33rd minute of the contest.

De Wolf, a newcomer from Eindhoven, The Netherlands, gave the Pride the lead and the eventual win with her first collegiate goal, picking up a rebound of classmate Anne van den Boomen's shot in front and slipping it past UML sophomore goalie Eva Berkhout (9 saves).

Hofstra returns to action on Wednesday, August 30 when the Pride host the Saints of Siena College at the Hofstra Field Hockey Stadium. Game time is noon.
