MSOC: Hofstra Shuts Out Penn State In Season Opener

University Park, Pa. – The Hofstra Men's Soccer team got the season started quickly, with senior Danny Elliott scoring in the seventh minute to give the Pride a 1-0 win over Penn State on Friday night at Jeffrey Field.

Hofstra (1-0) earned its first-ever win over the Nittany Lions (0-1) improving to 1-1-1 all-time against Penn State. Elliott got the ball at the left edge of the 18-yard box, made a move around a defender and sent a blast into the top right corner to give the Pride the lead it would never relinquish.

Junior goalkeeper Alex Ashton tied a career high with five saves, including a handful of highlight-reel stops to keep the Nittany Lions off the board and earn his first career solo shutout.

The Pride heads to No. 6 Maryland for a 7 p.m. game on Monday.

Notes:
-Hofstra has now won its past three season openers and five of its last six.
-Elliott, senior Meshack Eshun Addy and sophomore Luke Brown all finished with two shots.
-Freshmen Matthew Vowinkel and George O'Malley earned starts in their collegiate debuts. Storm Strongin, Marc Rodriguez and Andrea Codispoti also made their debuts, coming off the bench.
