BB: Hofstra Falls To Fordham On Ninth Inning Home Run

Hempstead, NY – Jake Baker hit a pinch hit three-run home run in the top of the ninth inning to left Fordham past Hofstra, 7-4, Tuesday afternoon at University Field. The Pride was held hitless over the final 5 2/3 innings by a pair of Fordham relievers.

Hofstra, which was playing its final non-conference game of the season, fell to 11-31 on the season. Fordham improved to 19-22 on the year and snapped a nine-game losing streak with the win.

The Rams scored a single run in each of the first four innings off of Hofstra starter Jorge Marrero. The Pride tied the score at two in the second on an RBI ground out from Chris Hardardt and a run-scoring single from Stephen Foster. The Pride tied the game again, this time at 4-4, in the fourth with a run scoring on an error and an RBI base hit from Vito Friscia.

The pitching then got locked in for the next several innings, though Fordham had several scoring opportunities until capitalizing in the ninth. An error and an infield single put runners at first and second for Baker, who is usually a starter for the Rams. The freshman left-hander took a Seamus Brazill offering and put it over the right field fence for what proved to be the winning runs.

Mike Cowell and Shane McDonald held the Pride in check over the final 5 2/3 innings, allowing no hits and two walks. McDonald got the win to even his record at 1-1 on the season after pitching the final three innings.

Brazill (1-2) took the loss after allowing three runs (2 earned) on five hits in three innings.

???????Friscia and David Leiderman had two hits each for the Pride.

Mark Donadio, who homered in the first inning for Fordham was one of six Rams with two hits. Matthew Kozuch had two hits and also drove in a pair of runs.

???????Hofstra is back in action Friday at 3 p.m. when it opens up a home Colonial Athletic Association series against Elon.

NOTES:
-Friscia extended his hitting streak to eight games and his on-base streak to 26 games.
-Teddy Cillis saw his nine-game hitting streak snapped
