BB: Hofstra Splits Twinbill With Elon; Cillis Sets Single Game K Record

Hempstead, NY – John Rooney and Chris Weiss combined to strike out 14 batters in a game one win, while Teddy Cillis struck out a school record 16 batters in a game two loss as Hofstra split a Colonial Athletic Association doubleheader with Elon Saturday at University Field. The Pride took game one, 7-4, while Elon won the nightcap, 8-1.

The Pride moved to 12-32 overall and 5-12 in the CAA with the split. Elon slipped to 21-26 overall and 11-9 in league action.

Rooney (4-7) went 6 1/3 innings in his game one start, allowing two runs on five hits with five walks and seven strikeouts. Weiss came in in the seventh and closed out the game, allowing two runs on two hits with seven strikeouts in 2 2/3 innings of work to earn his second save of the season.

Hofstra led 4-0 after a four-run third highlighted by a two-run home run from Vito Friscia, while two other runs scored on wild pitches. But Kyle Jackson cut the Elon deficit in half in the sixth with a two-run home run off Rooney.

Hofstra manufactured a run in the sixth to extend the lead to three as Vinnie Costello walked, stole second, advanced to third on a throwing error and scored on Brad Witkowski's single. The run proved invaluable as Hayden Platt's two-run homer in the eighth off Weiss made it a 5-4 game in favor of the Pride. Witkowski would provide additional breathing room in the eighth with a two-run home run to make it 7-4.

???????Elon starter Kyle Brnovich (5-4) took the loss after allowing five runs on five hits in 5 2/3 innings. He walked three and hit five batters while recording four strikeouts.

Witkowski and Friscia each had two hits in the opening game for the Pride. Costello scored twice and had two stolen bases.

In game two Cillis posted 16 strikeouts, besting the previous record of 13 set by Ryan Cosentino on two occasions, but the Hofstra offense could not solve Elon's pitching tandem of Jordan Barrett and George Kirby. Barrett (3-3) allowed one run on four hits over seven innings with eight strikeouts, while Kirby pitched two perfect innings in the 8-1 Phoenix win.

???????Hofstra took a 1-0 lead in the first on Friscia's RBI single that scored Witkowski, who had singled and stole second. But that was all the offense the Pride would muster as Hofstra managed just four more base runners the rest of the way.
???????
Cillis (0-9) allowed four runs (three earned) on eight hits in seven innings. Elon would score twice in the third on RBI doubles from Ryne Ogren and Platt. The Phoenix would tack on two more runs in the fifth on Jackson's second home run of the day, a two-run shot to center field. Elon would add four more runs in the eighth off Jorge Marrero with Platt driving in two with a single.

The team will conclude the series Sunday at 1 p.m.

Notes:
-Friscia extended his hitting streak to 10 games and his on-base streak to 28 games
-The 14 strikeouts in game one was a season high for the Pride pitching staff until Cillis, Marrero and Seamus Brazill combined for 18 in game two
