Newark, DE – The Hofstra Women's Lacrosse team dropped a 17-9 decision to Delaware on Sunday afternoon at Delaware Stadium as the Blue Hens scored eight straight goals during the second half to break open a close game.
The loss drops the Pride's record to 6-5 overall and 0-2 in Colonial Athletic Association play. Delaware improved to 6-5 and 1-0 in league action.
Hofstra was led by freshman
Alyssa Parrella as she posted five points on three goals and two assists, to go along with three draw controls, three caused turnovers and three ground balls.
Delaware got on the board to start the game with a pair of goals before Hofstra notched four straight to lead 4-2 with 16:50 left in the opening stanza. Senior
Morgan Knox got the Pride's first goal before Parrella, sophomore Lexi Lenghan and junior
Carlee Ancona each found the back of the net during the run.
The Blue Hens turned around and put together a 5-0 scoring run to open up a 7-4 advantage following an unassisted goal from Kirsten Hale with just over seven minutes left in the first half.
Hofstra would make it a two-goal game at the break as Parrella scored twice in the final 6:01 sandwiched around a Delaware goal to make it 8-6 at intermission.
The Pride closed to within 9-8 early in the second stanza as senior
Becky Conto and junior
Drew Shapiro tallied goals in the first 10 minutes of the half to make it a one-goal contest. The Blue Hens responded, though, and scored two straight to push the lead back to three, 11-8, and force Hofstra to call a time out.
After the time out the Blue Hens would add consecutive goals from Jamie Schwartz to push their lead to 13-8 with just under 15 minutes left in regulation.
That would be enough for Delaware as the Blue Hens would go on to earn the victory.
