Hempstead, NY – Freshman
Alyssa Parrella continued her strong freshman campaign with five points (3G, 2A), along with five draw controls, five ground balls and two caused turnovers, but #17 James Madison jumped out to an early lead and went on to defeat Hofstra, 17-9, on Friday evening at James M. Shuart Stadium.
Hofstra falls to 6-6 and 0-3 in Colonial Athletic Association play with the loss, while James Madison improved to 10-5 and 4-0 in the conference.
Freshman
Alexa Mattera also had a solid game for the Pride with three points (2G, 1A) and three draw controls, two ground balls and two caused turnovers.
Haley Warden led James Madison with six goals and also posted a game-high six draw controls.
Hofstra got on board first with a goal from Mattera before James Madison scored six straight goals to open up a 6-1 advantage with 10:34 left in the first half. Warden, who had four first half goals, scored twice during the 6-0 run to push the Dukes into the lead.
A goal from senior
Becky Conto would end the JMU run and the Pride would also see Mattera and Parrella find the back of the net during a 3-0 scoring run that made it 6-4 with 7:41 left in the opening stanza.
After a time out by James Madison, the Dukes responded and closed the half with five straight goals to lead 11-4 at the break.
Hofstra would score the first two goals of the second stanza and three of the first four as they cut the deficit to 12-7 with 21:42 left in regulation. The first two goals of the half were scored by junior
Carlee Ancona and the third of the opening run was scored by Parrella on a free-position shot.
JMU would end any hopes of a Pride comeback as the Dukes answered with the next five goals of the contest to open up a 17-7 advantage with just under eight minutes left.
The Pride would end the scoring in the game with a pair of goals in the final three minutes as freshman
Mary Kate Gerety and Parrella scored to account for the 17-9 final.
Sophomore
Rachel Gregory led Hofstra with three caused turnovers and added a pair of ground balls, while sophomore
Maddie Fields had eight saves and four ground balls.
Emily Poelma made nine saves for JMU in the win, while Kristen Gaudian posted three goals and one assist.
Hofstra returns to action on Sunday when it hosts Towson at 1 p.m.
