BB: Hofstra Takes Series Finale From Towson

Hempstead, NY - Hofstra banged out 13 hits, its second consecutive double-digit output, to back the strong pitching of John Rooney and John Ryan as the Pride salvaged the final game of a three-game Colonial Athletic Association series with an 11-5 win. The win also snapped a five-game losing streak for the Pride.

Hofstra moved to 8-21 on the season and 2-4 in the CAA with the win. Towson dropped to 12-16 overall and 2-4 in league play.

Tom Archer led the Pride with three hits, including two doubles, and three runs scored. Vito Friscia had two hits, a two-run home run in the first inning and an RBI double in the fifth, and drove in three runs. Brad Witkowski also had two hits, including double, and drove in one run. Vinnie Costello also joined in on the hit parade with two, including an RBI double. Steven Foster had one hit and drove in a pair of runs, while Mikey Riesner had a hit and two runs scored.

Rooney (2-6) went six innings and allowed five runs (four earned) on seven hits. He struck out eight in a 134-pitch performance. Ryan came on and pitched three scoreless innings, allowing a pair of hits, to notch his first career save.

After Towson took a 1-0 lead in the first, the Pride responded with three runs in the bottom of the inning with Friscia delivering a two-run blast to left and David Leiderman driving in a third run on a ground out.

Trey Martinez and Mark Grunberg had back-to-back run scoring hits for the Tigers in the second to tie the score at three but Hofstra once again had an answer in the bottom of the inning. Archer led off with a double and went to third on a bunt single from Costello. Foster then plated Archer with the go-ahead run on a fielder's choice ground ball. The Pride would not relinquish the lead the rest of the way.

Towson did cut the lead to 6-5 in the sixth, but Archer doubled in the Pride's half and came in to score on an infield single from Foster to give the Pride a 7-5 lead. Hofstra would add four more runs in the eighth to put the game out of reach.

Towson starter Michael Adams (2-3) took the loss after allowing seven runs on 10 hits in 5 2/3 innings. Grunberg had three hits and three RBIs for the Tigers, while Richie Palacios had two hits and a run scored.

Hofstra is back in action Tuesday afternoon when it hosts Fairfield at 3:30 p.m.
