BB: Hofstra's 14 Hits Not Enough In Loss To Towson

Hempstead, NY - Richard Miller was 2-3 with five RBIs and Mark Grunberg scored three runs as Towson picked up a 12-6 Colonial Athletic Association victory over Hofstra Saturday at University Field. The win clinched the series for the Tigers ahead of Sunday's finale.

Towson (12-15, 2-3 CAA) broke a 2-2 tie in the second, scoring three runs on a double off the bat of Miller. Hofstra cut the deficit to 5-3 in the fourth on Steven Foster's sacrifice fly, but the Tigers opened up a 10-3 lead with a five-run fifth despite getting just one hit. The Tigers took advantage of Hofstra's wildness on the mound, drawing four walks and getting two hit batsmen in the inning. Richie Palacios had the only hit, a two-run single.

The Pride showed some life in the seventh, putting runners on the corners before a RBI fielder's choice from David Leiderman and a two-run home run from Mikey Riesner that made it a 10-6 game.

But Colin Gimblet had an RBI single and Miller added a sacrifice fly in the ninth to give Towson the six-run cushion.

Vito Friscia had two hits for the Pride including an RBI triple in the first inning. Riesner also had two hits, while Nick Bottari led the Pride with three hits including a double. Chris Hardardt also had two hits for Hofstra.

Kyle Stricker (2-2) got the win for Towson in relief of starter Kevin Ross, who left the game after getting hit by a line drive in the fourth inning. Stricker allowed five hits and three runs in four innings of work.

Hofstra starter Jorge Marrero fell to 1-4 on the year after allowing 10 runs on five hits in 4 1/3 innings. Matt Weissheier threw 3 2/3 innings of scoreless relief for the Pride.

The teams conclude the series Sunday at 1 p.m.
