WLAX: Epic Comeback Falls Short For Hofstra In CAA Opener

Philadelphia, PA – Freshman Alyssa Parrella had a strong game with six points (four goals, two assists), along with eight draw controls, four ground balls and four caused turnovers, but it wasn't enough as the Hofstra Women's Lacrosse team saw their epic comeback fall short in a 12-11 loss to Drexel on Friday evening at Vidas Field.

Hofstra rallied back from an 8-0 deficit in the first half to get back to within one in the closing minutes.

The loss ended a four-game win streak for Hofstra, which falls to 6-4 and 0-1 in Colonial Athletic Association play. Drexel improved to 6-5 and 1-0 in league play.

Senior Becky Conto had a career-high five goals and added an assist for a career-high six points.

Drexel was clicking on all cylinders in the first half as the Dragons scored the first eight goals of the game to lead 8-0 with just under five minutes left before halftime. Lauren Gerrie had a hat trick in the opening stanza to pace the Drexel attack.

Hofstra would get on the board with 1:09 left before intermission as Parrella scored her 28th goal of the season to end the Drexel run and close the gap to 8-1. Parrella added three draw controls in the first 30 minutes to tie for game-high honors at that point.

Sophomore Lexi Lenaghan and Parrella would score the first two goals of the second half to make it 8-3 as the Pride put together a 3-0 scoring run spanning the two halves.

After Drexel pushed it to 9-3, Conto and senior Morgan Knox found the back of the net for the Pride to make it 9-5 with 17 minutes left in regulation.

Hofstra would fight back to close the gap to two, 11-9, as Parrella scored back-to-back goals with less than 10 minutes left – the last one with 8:06 to play to make it a two-goal game.

Drexel would get some much-needed breathing room as Nadia Pelham-Lacey scored an unassisted goal with 7:11 to play to make it 12-9.

Conto would then come up huge late for the Pride as she scored a pair of goals with under seven minutes remaining to close the score to 12-11 and set up the game for an exciting finish.

The Pride would be unable to tally the tying goal, though, as Drexel held on for the narrow victory.

Freshman Alexa Mattera added three draw controls and two ground balls in the game, while sophomore Maddie Fields posted six saves and three ground balls.

Pelham-Lacey led Drexel with six points on five goals and one assist, while Caroline Thiele had a trio of assists. Carlee Ries earned the win for Drexel with six saves.

Hofstra returns to action on Sunday when it travels to Delaware to face the Blue Hens at 1 p.m.

NOTES
- Hofstra is now 26-8 all-time against Drexel.
- Conto's previous career-high in goals and points last occurred against Central Connecticut State on March 25.
