Brookline, MA –
Rob Weissheier's three-run home run in the top of the sixth inning snapped a 2-2 tie and propelled Hofstra to a 5-2 win over Colonial Athletic Association-leading Northeastern Sunday at Friedman Diamond. The Hofstra pitching tandem of
Matt Weissheier and
Chris Weiss limited the Huskies to two hits on the day.
Hofstra improved to 11-30 overall and 4-11 in the CAA with the win. Northeastern saw its six-game winning streak snapped and fell to 22-18 and 11-4 in league action.
The Huskies got on the board first, taking a 2-0 lead in the third on a two-run home run from Charlie McConnell. But the lead was short-lived as
Brad Witkowski tied the game with a two-run blast of his own in the fifth.
Teddy Cillis led off the sixth with an infield single and
David Leiderman followed with a single up the middle to bring up
Rob Weissheier. The freshman took the first pitch he saw over the wall in left centerfield to put the Pride up by three.
Weiss (4-2) made the lead stand up as he held the Huskies without a hit over the final four innings, allowing just one base runner. Weiss pitched 5 1/3 innings of relief, allowing one hit with seven strikeouts.
Matt Weissheier started for the Pride, his first career start, and allowed two runs on one hit in 3 2/3 innings.
Hofstra had 12 hits on the day with
Rob Weissheier, Cillis, Leiderman,
Chris Hardardt and
Tom Archer each collecting two apiece.
Brian Christian (5-1) suffered his first loss of the season after allowing five runs on seven hits in 5-plus innings of work.
Hofstra returns to action Tuesday when it hosts Fordham at 3 p.m.
