Elon, NC – Senior
Becky Conto scored three goals, but Elon raced out to a 6-0 lead in the game and they went on to defeat the Hofstra Women's lacrosse team, 15-7, on Sunday afternoon at Rudd Field.
Hofstra falls to 8-7 overall and 2-4 in Colonial Athletic Association play with the loss, while Elon improved to 11-5 and 3-2 in league play. The loss ended a two-game win streak for the Pride.
For Conto it marked her third straight game with three goals.
The Phoenix led 6-0 just under 10 minutes into the game as Nicole Sinacori had a pair of goals during the game-opening run.
Hofstra would stem the tide as junior
Carlee Ancona scored off an assist from freshman
Alyssa Parrella and them eight seconds later freshman
Mary Kate Gerety made it 6-2 off another Parrella assist with 18:22 left in the opening stanza.
Elon then scored seven straight games to make it 13-2 before junior
Drew Shapiro ended the first half scoring with an unassisted tally at the 1:07 mark.
Hofstra would outscore the Phoenix, 4-2, in the final 30 minutes to close the gap as Conto scored all three of her goals in the final six minutes and freshman
Alexa Mattera added the other Pride goal.
Conto tallied five draw controls for the Pride, while Mattera posted a team-best three caused turnovers. Mattera and sophomore
Maddie Fields each had four ground balls.
Sinacori led Elon with five points on four goals and one assist, while Sloane Kessler had three goals and an assist and Stephanie Asher posted two goals and two assists.
Hofstra returns to action on Friday when it hosts nationally-ranked Stony Brook at 7 p.m.
NOTES
- Hofstra is now 1-2 all-time against Elon.
- Mattera tied her career-high with four ground balls (previously set against Central Connecticut State). Her three caused turnovers were a new season-high as she previously had two on a trio occasions.
