BB: UNCW Defeats Hofstra To Earn CAA Series Win

Hempstead, NY – Hofstra rallied from an 11-1 deficit with six unanswered runs, but UNCW scored nine times in the eighth inning to pull away in an 20-7 victory Sunday afternoon. The win clinched the Colonial Athletic Association series for the Seahawks.

Hofstra dropped to 10-27 on the season and 3-9 in the CAA with the loss. UNCW is 18-20 overall and 7-5 in league play.

UNCW scored five times in the second and three times in the third to take an 8-0 lead. Riley Zayicek delivered the big blow in the second, a three-run home run. The freshman outfielder would add a sacrifice fly in the third as well.

Hofstra got on the board in the fourth following a single from Rob Weissheier that scored Brad Witkowski to make it a 9-1 game. After UNCW plated two in the fifth, the Pride answered with three runs as Teddy Cillis hit a two-run home run and David Leiderman added an RBI double. The Pride would add three more runs in the sixth, all coming in on a three-run double from Vito Friscia.

But the Seahawks hit six home runs, including four consecutive, in the eighth inning off three different Hofstra pitchers to put the game out of reach. Ryan Jeffers, Zayicek, Mason Berne and Robbie Thorburn went back-to-back-to-back-to-back before Nick Feight and Brian Mims homered later in the inning.
