BB: Hofstra Defeats UNCW Behind Rooney's Strong Outing

Hempstead, NY – John Rooney struck out a career-best 10 batters over eight innings and Hofstra was able to rally in the late innings to pick up a 6-3 win over UNCW Saturday at University Field. The victory evens the Colonial Athletic Association series at one game apiece ahead of Sunday's 12 p.m. contest.

Hofstra improved to 10-26 on the year and 3-8 in the CAA. The Seahawks dropped to 17-20 overall and 6-4 in league play.

Rooney allowed two runs on six hits over his eight innings to improve to 3-7 on the year. Chris Weiss allowed a solo home run in the ninth to close out the game.

Hofstra trailed 2-0 going into the bottom of the sixth following a second inning RBI double from Blake Deatherage and a solo home run from Brian Mims in the sixth. But the Pride got a run back in their at-bat on a RBI single from Teddy Cillis and then took the lead with two runs in the seventh. Brad Witkowski scored on a wild pitch and Chris Hardardt drove in the go-ahead run with a single.

The Pride would tack on three insurance runs in the eighth. Vito Friscia hit a one-out home run to center and, following a two-out single from David Leiderman, Rob Weissheier drilled his first career home run to make it a 6-2 game.

Ryan Jeffers homered off Weiss in the ninth and the Seahawks brought the tying run to the plate in the inning before a game-ending fly out.

Reliever Austin Warren took the loss for UNCW and fell to 2-3 after allowing a run on two hits in one inning of work.

Both teams managed eight hits on the day. Cillis and Weissheier each had two hits for the Pride. Eight different Seahawk players had one hit for UNCW.
