WLAX: Shapiro And Conto Lead Hofstra To Rout Of William & Mary

Hempstead, NY – Junior Drew Shapiro tied her career-high with five goals and senior Becky Conto tallied a hat trick and tied her career-high with nine draw controls as the Hofstra Women's Lacrosse team captured a dominating 18-6 victory over William & Mary on Friday evening at James M. Shuart Stadium.

Hofstra won its second straight game to improve to 8-6 overall and 2-3 in Colonial Athletic Association play. William & Mary fell to 3-13 and 0-5 in the league with the loss.

The Pride's stellar defense would see Hofstra hold the William & Mary starting lineup scoreless the entire game as all of the Tribe's points came from its bench.

William & Mary scored two of the first three goals, both courtesy of Alexandria Specht, to lead 2-1 four minutes into the contest. At that point it was all Hofstra as the Pride scored 13 unanswered goals to end the first stanza and take a commanding 14-2 lead at the break. Shapiro tied her career-high in the first half alone with five goals, while freshman Alyssa Parrella posted three goals and an assist in the first 30 minutes.

Hofstra would take the lead for good with goals 13 seconds apart as Shapiro scored at the 22:41 mark and Parrella scored off an assist from junior Carlee Ancona with 22:28 left in the opening stanza.

Conto would score to open the second half scoring to make it a 15-2 game and continue the string of consecutive Pride goals at 14.

William & Mary got a goal from Annalise Lower to end the Hofstra run, but the Pride would push its lead to as many as 14 goals as they used a 3-1 scoring run to make it 18-4 with just over 13 minutes remaining.

The Tribe got two goals from Specht in the final seven minutes to account for the final score.

Parrella posted a team-high six points on four goals and two assists for Hofstra, while freshman Mary Kate Gerety had two goals and an assist. Ancona and junior Shea McAvoy each had three ground balls and two caused turnovers to lead Hofstra. Ancona also added a goal and an assist. Sophomore Lexi Lenaghan chipped in with two goals and an assist.

Specht finished with four goals for William & Mary, while Abby Junior notched three ground balls and one caused turnover.

Hofstra will play its final regular season CAA contest on Sunday when it travels to Elon for a 12 p.m. contest. The game will air on the Lax Sports Network.
