BB: Hofstra Rally Falls Short In Loss To UNCW

Hempstead, NY – Teddy Cillis and Vinnie Costello each hit home runs, but UNCW was able to pull out a 7-4 victory Friday in the opening game of a three-game Colonial Athletic Association series at University Field. Hofstra rallied from a 5-0 deficit to cut the Seahawk lead to one in the seventh before UNCW tacked on a pair of runs in the ninth.

Hofstra fell to 9-26 on the season and 2-8 in league play. UNCW, which was picked to win the CAA, improved to 17-19 overall and 6-4 in conference.

The Seahawks took advantage of three Pride errors in the third to take a 3-0 lead. Casey Golden and Nick Feight had RBI singles in the inning. UNCW would add two more runs in the fourth as Daniel Stack had an RBI double and Cole Weiss followed with an RBI single.

Cillis, who started the game on the mound for Hofstra, made it a 5-2 game in the fifth with a two-run blast to left field. Then Costello led off the seventh with a solo shot to left and after Hofstra loaded the bases, a second run would score on a wild pitch. The Pride would leave the bases loaded in the seventh and then had another opportunity in the eighth with three men on and one out. But Clark Cota came out of the bullpen and induced an inning ending double play to snuff out the threat.

In the top of the ninth, Feight added an RBI double and Brian Mims added an RBI single to account for the final two runs.

Cillis (0-7) pitched well in his six innings of work, allowing eight hits, five runs (three earned) with seven strikeouts and just one walk. John Ryan went the final three innings, allowing two runs on three hits.

Alex Royalty (6-2) picked up the win after going 6 2/3 innings and allowing four runs on nine hits with six strikeouts. Austin Easter faced two batters in the seventh, while Chris Joyner threw 2/3 of an inning. Cota went the final 1 2/3 to notch his fourth save of the season.

Cillis finished with a pair of hits, runs and RBIs on the day, while Rob Weissheier also added two hits.

Golden had three hits for the Seahawks, while Feight and Robbie Thorburn added two each.

The teams continue the series Saturday at 1 p.m.
