BB: Hofstra Drops 4-1 Decision To No. 5 St. John's

Hempstead, NY - Sean Mooney threw seven innings of one-run ball as No. 5 St. John's posted a 4-1 win over Hofstra at University Field on Saturday afternoon.

The Red Storm improved to 20-2 on the season, despite matching their lowest run total of the season. Hofstra fell to 7-17 on the year with the loss.

The Pride opened the scoring in the second as Vito Friscia led off with a double and went to third on a sacrifice bunt from David Leiderman. Teddy Cillis then drove in the run with a ground out to first.

But that would be the only run that Mooney would allow as the freshman gave up just four hits and struck out seven to move to 3-0 on the year.

The Red Storm took advantage of two Hofstra errors in the fourth inning to take a 3-1 lead and then added another run in the fifth.

Michael Donadio had three hits to lead the Red Storm, while Jesse Berardi had two hits and an RBI in the three-run fourth. Josh Shaw drove in the third run of the fourth for St. John's while Donadio added an RBI single in the fifth.

Cillis (0-4) started on the mound for Hofstra and took the loss after allowing four runs (three earned) on eight hits in 5 1/3 innings. Chris Weiss allowed one hit over the remaining 3 2/3 innings.

Gavin Hollowell pitched two scoreless innings to record his second save of the year for the Red Storm.

In addition to Friscia's hit, the Pride also got hits from Steven Foster, Brad Witkowski, Cillis and Mikey Riesner.

The teams will meet again Sunday at St. John's with a 1 p.m. first pitch.

NOTES:
-The Red Storm is the highest ranked team to visit University Field
