BB: Hofstra Routs NYIT In Home Opener

Hempstead, NY - Five players had multiple hits to lead a 15-hit outburst as Hofstra won its home opener with a 14-3 victory over NYIT Wednesday afternoon. David Leiderman led the way with four hits on the day, while Tom Archer had two doubles and four RBIs.
 
Hofstra snapped a four-game losing streak with the win and moved to 3-8 on the year. The Bears fell to 1-8 on the season.
 
Hofstra opened the scoring in the first as Vito Friscia drilled a two-out solo home run to right. But the Bears tied it in the third with a two-out rally. Walks to Frank Sanacore and Joe Fusco were followed by a RBI double from Louis Mele, but Fusco was cut down at third to end the inning.
 
The Pride took the lead for good in the bottom of the third as Steven Foster legged out an infield single and then came all the way around to score on a single and a two-base error from Sean Rausch. Friscia would knock in his second run with a sacrifice fly to make it a 3-1 game.
 
Archer doubled in the Pride's fourth run with a shot to the wall in left that scored Mikey Riesner. Hofstra then blew the game open with a seven-run fifth. Vinnie Costello had a two-run single and Archer delivered a bases-loaded double that scored three runs. Foster would close out the inning with a two-run home run to right to make it 11-1.

Hofstra would add three runs in the seventh with Riesner, Costello and Rob Weissheier collecting RBIs.
 
NYIT would get two runs in the eighth on a two-run triple from Zach Kleinwaks.
 
Hofstra used nine pitchers on the afternoon with James Beasley (1-0) getting the win. The freshman pitched the third inning and allowed a run on one hit and two walks. Chris Weiss struck out the side in his lone inning of relief in the fifth. Hofstra pitching allowed just four hits on the day. 
 
Elias Martinez  (0-2) started and took the loss for NYIT, allowing 11 runs (3 earned) on nine hits in five innings of work.
 
Foster, Friscia and Costello each had two hits on the day to join Leiderman and Archer with multi-hit games.
 
Hofstra is back in action Friday night in Troy, Alabama, in the opener of a four-game series with Troy University. First pitch is scheduled for 6 p.m.
 
Notes:
 

-The 14 runs were a season-high for the Pride.
-Hofstra pitching recorded a season-best 13 strikeouts.
-Hofstra moved to 28-21-2 against NYIT and have won the last 12 meetings.
