WLAX: Hofstra Falls To No. 1 Maryland At Home

Hempstead, N.Y. – Hofstra Women's Lacrosse fell to the nation's top team, No. 1 Maryland, 18-7, on Saturday afternoon at James M. Shuart Stadium.

Senior Morgan Knox led the Pride (2-2) with three goals, while sophomore Lexi Lenaghan and freshman Alexa Mattera each had two. Junior Carlee Ancona finished with a pair of assists. Hofstra goalkeeper Maddie Fields finished with a career-high 11 saves.

Zoe Stukenberg scored five goals for the Terrapins (4-0), with Meghan Whittle chipping in three and Jen Giles finishing with a two goals and two assists.

Hofstra opened the scoring, with Knox finding the back of the net on a pass from Alyssa Parrella just 2:28 into the game to give the Pride a 1-0 lead. The Terps answered less than three minutes later on Whittle's first of the day. Hofstra nearly took a 2-1 lead, but had a goal disallowed because of a crease violation. Kacie Longon then put Maryland ahead, 2-1, just 39 seconds after Whittle's tally.

Mattera's first of the day knotted the score at two 8:50 into the contest, before Whittle knocked home another to take back the lead. Stukenberg's first put the Terps up by two, but Mattera answered just over a minute later, streaking in on net from the left side and tucking away a high shot over the head of Maryland goalkeeper Megan Taylor.
The Terps would then close the first half on an 8-0 run, including three man-up goals to put the game out of reach.

After Stukenberg tallied the first goal of the second half, the Pride found its offense again scoring twice early in the frame. Both came on passes from Carlee Ancona, with Lenaghan finishing in close on the first and Knox tucking in the second, also from close range. The Terps answered with two of their own to push the lead back to 10, before Knox picked up her own rebound for her third of the day to make it 15-6 with 14:58 to go. Maryland found the back of the net three more times to seal the victory, with Lenaghan tallying Hofstra's final goal with just over two minutes left to play.

Shots were nearly even in the second half at 15-14 in favor of Maryland. Hofstra led in ground balls, 21-19, while draw controls were 16-11 to the Terps.

The Pride is home again next weekend, hosting Johns Hopkins on Saturday at 1 p.m. at James M. Shuart Stadium.
