BB: Hofstra Opens CAA Action With 2-1 Win At Charleston

Mt. Pleasant, SC – Mikey Riesner's RBI single in the top of the ninth inning broke a 1-1 tie as Hofstra opened Colonial Athletic Association play with a 2-1 win over College of Charleston at The Ballpark at Patriots Point Friday night.

Hofstra moved to 6-14 overall and 1-0 in the CAA. Charleston saw its losing streak hit seven games as the Cougars slipped to 8-14 overall and 0-1 in league action.

The Pride got great pitching efforts from starter Teddy Cillis and reliever Chris Weiss. Cillis allowed an unearned run over six innings, giving up six hits while striking out eight. Weiss (2-1) pitched the final three innings, allowing one hit with five strikeouts.

Hofstra took a 1-0 lead in the second off a solo home run from catcher Vito Friscia, his second of the season. Charleston was able to tie the game in the fourth as the Cougars put runners on first and second with no out. Cillis was able to get the next two batters, but a two-out throwing error allowed the tying run to score from second.

The teams matched zeros until the ninth. David Leiderman reached on a one-out single and went to second as Nick Bottari reached on an infield error. Riesner, who had committed the Hofstra throwing error, came through with his bat as he singled through the right side to score Leiderman with what proved to be the winning run.

The Cougars had a chance in the ninth as Weiss walked the leadoff batter. Luke Manzo sacrificed him to second before Weiss struck out Tommy Richter. Logan McRae walked to put the winning run on first, but Weiss caught Evan Roper looking to end the game.

Charleston got strong pitching from Nathan Ocker, who was making his first start of the season. Ocker allowed one run on three hits and struck out nine. Carter Love (1-1) also pitched well in taking the loss, allowing one run on three hits in three innings of work.

Brad Witkowski had two hits for the Pride and also added a stolen base.

Hofstra and Charleston will meet in game two of the three-game series Saturday afternoon at 2:30 p.m.
