Salem, Virginia – The Hofstra Baseball team dropped a pair of one-run games to Albany Saturday at Salem Memorial Stadium. The Pride dropped game one, 7-6, and then lost the nightcap, 4-3, on a game-ending sacrifice fly.
The Pride slipped to 4-13 on the season, while Albany improved to 6-5.
Steven Foster and
Vinnie Costello each had three hits and two runs scored in game one including a solo home run for Costello in the ninth that got the Pride within one. Foster had a double and a triple.
Brad Witkowski and
Mikey Riesner each had two hits with Witkowski knocking in a pair of runs as well.
Teddy Cillis started game one and took the loss to fall to 0-3. He allowed five runs (four earned) on nine hits over five innings. He walked four and struck out four.
Kyle Sacks had three hits for the Great Danes, while Evan Harasta and Matt Hinchy added two each. Jack McClure allowed a run on three hits over five innings to get the win and improve to 2-0. Dominic Savino went the final three innings to notch his second save.
In game two, Albany broke a 3-3 tie in the bottom of the seventh inning with a sacrifice fly following two walks and a passed ball to take the 4-3 win.
Hofstra had tied the game at three in the top of the fourth after loading the bases with no outs.
Parker Quinn then drove in the tying run on a fielder's choice before Albany escaped further damage with an inning ending double play.
The Great Danes put runners on first and second in the seventh on back to back walks.
Chris Weiss came on in relief of starter
Jorge Marrero and struck out his first batter. A passed ball allowed the runners to move into scoring position and Travis Collins followed with a sacrifice fly to left that scored the winning run.
Foster,
Nick Bottari and
David Leiderman each had two hits for the Pride. Marrero (1-2) took the loss for Hofstra, allowing four runs (one earned) on three hits over 6-plus innings. He walked three and struck out six.
David Hutchinson (1-0) took the win for Albany after pitching a scoreless top of the seventh.
The teams complete their three-game series Sunday at 11 a.m.
