Hempstead, NY – Junior goalie
Jack Concannon recorded a career-high 19 saves and senior
Josh Byrne added four goals and one assist to lead the Hofstra Pride to an 11-10 victory over the Friars of Providence College at cold and rainy James M. Shuart Stadium Saturday.
The Pride, who is ranked seventh in the Maverik Division I Media Poll and 11th in the Nike/USILA Coaches Poll this week, improved to 6-0 on the season for the first time since 1973. Providence slipped to 4-3 on the season.
Byrne recorded his fifth contest with five points or more this season while also posting his fifth hat-trick of the year. Concannon set his career-high for the second time this season with the 19 stops, including 11 in the second half as the Friars battled back from a 6-3 halftime deficit. The 19 saves top the 17 stops that he made at Georgetown on March 4. Sophomore
Jimmy Yanes recorded career-highs of three goals, and four points and equaled his career-best with one assist. Junior
Dylan Alderman added a goal and two assists while classmate
Brendan Kavanagh scored twice for the Pride.
Providence was led by sophomore Nick Hatzipetrakos and senior Keenan Assaraf with two goals and one assist each. Senior Austin Goltz scored twice and junior Connor Byrne added a goal and an assist for the Friars. Sophomore goalie Tate Boyce made six saves in the Providence goal.
The contest was a lesson in goal runs. Hofstra came out of the gate fast with Byrne scoring his 17th, 18th and 19th goals of the season in the first 3:57 to give the Pride a 3-0 advantage. But the Friars responded with three unanswered goals by Assaraf, Byrne and Goltz with Goltz's goal-a man-down goal-tying the game with 7:39 to play in the first quarter.
But Hofstra scored three more times in the first period as part of a five-goal run, as Kavanagh sandwiched two goals around a man-up goal by
Alex Moeser to take a 6-3 lead after one quarter. The Pride effort was helped by the return of senior face-off specialist
Kris Clarke, who won eight of 10 face-offs in the first period.
After a scoreless second quarter, Hofstra added two more goals, both by Yanes, to open up an 8-3 lead 3:55 into the third quarter. The Friars closed the gap to 8-5 with 4:51 to play in the third on goals by freshman Sean Leahy and Hatzipetrakos. But the Pride scored three goals, by Yanes, Alderman and Byrne, in the final 2:54 of the period to take an 11-5 lead after three quarters. Concannon made six saves for the Pride in the period.
The fourth quarter was all Providence as they scored five times, outshot the Pride, 14-5 and won four of five face-offs. The Friars started their comeback with goals by Hatzipetrakos and Herns in the first 4:13. Goltz added his second of the game with 8:38 to play and sophomore Joseph McHale closed the gap to 11-9 with 4:23 to play. Assaraf made the last minute nerve-wracking when he notched his second of the game with 35 second left. Only a five-save period by Concannon, including a stop on Kerns with 0:07 remaining, prevented the Friars from coming away with a victory as Hofstra walked away with the victory.
Providence outshot the Pride, 38-33 and won 13 of 24 face-offs. Hofstra picked up 23 ground balls to the Friars, 22.
Hofstra returns to action on Tuesday, March 21 when the Pride host local Long Island-rival Stony Brook at Shuart Stadium. Game time is 7 p.m.
