MLAX: Tierney and Concannon Lead #7 Hofstra Over Stony Brook

Hempstead, NY – Freshman Ryan Tierney equaled his career-high with four goals and junior Jack Concannon made 17 saves to lead the seventh-ranked Hofstra Pride to an 11-9 victory over the Seawolves of Stony Brook at James M. Shuart Stadium Tuesday night.

Hofstra improved to 7-0 on the season for the first time in school history. Stony Brook, which dropped its third consecutive game, falls to 4-3 on the year.

Tierney, who equaled his season-best with four goals set previously against Georgetown on March 4, scored on five shots in the contest. It was the fourth hat-trick of the season for Tierney. Concannon, who recorded double-digit saves for the sixth time in seven games, posted 17 saves or more for the third time this season. He made a career-high 19 saves against Providence last Saturday. Freshman Jimmy Yanes notched his second consecutive hat-trick with three goals on three shots and junior Dylan Alderman added two goals and two assists. Senior Josh Byrne added one goal and three assists for the Pride.

Stony Brook was led by senior Ryan Bitzer with two goals and four assists and classmate Alex Corpolongo added three goals. Freshman Tom Haun contributed two goals and classmate Wayne White had a goal and an assist. Junior Brandon Maciejewski made four saves and allowed seven goals in the first 26 minutes before being relieved by freshman Michael Bollinger, who made six saves and allowed four goals.

The two teams split the first four goals of the contest with Stony Brook getting on the board first with Bitzer denting the twine 5:30 into the contest. Hofstra responded with goals by Tierney and Yanes before Corpolongo tied the game up at 2-2 for Stony Brook with 1:22 to play in the first quarter.

The Pride came out in the second quarter with goals by Byrne, Yanes and junior Brendan Kavanagh to take a 5-2 lead with 8:22 to play in the half. After Stony Brook's Cory Vanginhoven closed the gap to 5-3 almost two minutes later, the Pride went on a five-goal run, with two before the half by Yanes, to complete the hat-trick, and Alderman to take a 7-3 halftime lead.

Tierney opened the second half with back-to-back man-up goals and Alderman added his second to boost the Hofstra lead to 10-3 with 8:18 to play in the third. But Stony Brook mounted their own rally, scoring four unanswered goals with Bitzer, Haun, Corpolongo and White scoring to close the deficit to 10-7 with 7:11 to play in the fourth quarter.

Tierney would stop the Seawolves momentum with his fourth of the game and 16th of the season with 4:29 to play to give the Pride a four-goal cushion at 11-7. Haun would score 1:14 later for Stony Brook and Corpolongo would make the last 83 seconds nerve-racking with his third of the game to close out the scoring.

Stony Brook outshot Hofstra, 37-36 and picked up 35 ground balls to the Pride's 26. But Hofstra, behind senior Kris Clarke, won 16 of 24 face-offs with Clarke winning 16 of 23.

Hofstra returns to action this Saturday, March 25 when the Pride host another local rival in the Red Storm of St. John at Shuart Stadium. Game time is 7 p.m.
