BB: Hofstra Splits Doubleheader With Troy

Troy, AL – Steven Foster's ninth inning RBI double snapped a 5-5 tie and Teddy Cillis added a three-run home run as Hofstra picked up a 9-5 win in the first game of a doubleheader against Troy at Riddle-Pace Field. The Trojans took the nightcap, 7-1.

The Trojans opened the scoring with an unearned run in the first as Steven Whitaker walked to lead off the inning and went to second on a wild pitch. He moved to third on a sacrifice bunt and came in to score on a passed ball.

Hofstra put up three runs in the top of the third as Justin Smith singled, Foster walked and Brad Witkowski reached on an error to load the bases. Mikey Riesner cleared the bases with a triple down the right field line to give Hofstra the 3-1 lead. The Pride loaded the bases again in the fifth but was only able to get one run home on a bases loaded walk to Cillis.

The Trojans tied the score with a four run sixth. Chase Smartt had a RBI single and Justin Friend delivered the big blow with a three-run home run that knotted the game at 5-5.

Smith, who was making his first appearance of the season, led off the ninth with a double to cap off a 4-4 day. Foster had tried to sacrifice unsuccessfully, but then delivered the go-ahead double that plated pinch-runner Tom Archer. Witkowski would then walk and two batters later Cillis launched his second home run of the year.

Chris Weiss (1-1) got the win with 3 2/3 of one-hit relief. The junior struck out five batters as well. Cillis finished with four RBIs on the day.

Cory Gill took the loss for Troy, allowing four runs on three hits in the ninth inning.

In game two, Brandon Lockridge hit a two-run home run in the first inning and Troy never looked back as it salvaged the split. John Rooney (1-3) took the loss for the Pride, allowing five runs on eight hits in six innings. Hofstra got a run in the eighth on an RBI single from Archer that scored Sean Rausch.

The teams conclude the series Sunday at 12 p.m. (Central Time).
