Justin Wright-Foreman had another outstanding outing with a game-high 29 points, but it wasn't enough as the Hofstra Men's Basketball team narrowly fell to Towson, 69-65, on Thursday evening at SECU Arena.
For Wright-Foreman it was his 16th straight game in double figures.
Hofstra slips to 12-14 overall and 4-9 in Colonial Athletic Association play. The loss ended a modest two-game win streak for the Pride. Towson improved to 16-10 and 8-5 in the league.
Hofstra led by as many as 10 in the opening stanza before settling in for a seven-point lead, 36-29, at the break. Wright-Foreman led all scorers in the game with 15 points in the first 20 minutes as he hit a trio of three-pointers to help the Pride to the halftime advantage.
With the score knotted at seven with 14:34 left, a Wright-Foreman jumper was followed by a three-pointer from senior
Brian Bernardi to give the Pride an early 12-7 lead almost seven minutes into the contest.
Towson would get a layup from Deshaun Morman with 9:28 left in the half to even the score at 18 before Hofstra used a 15-5 run to make it 33:23 with 3:12 showing on the clock. Wright-Foreman had five points during the run to help the Pride. A tip-in from Dennis Tunstall closed the first half scoring and sent the teams into the locker room with the Pride leading.
Hofstra opened the second half scoring a three-pointer from Wright-Foreman in front of the Pride bench to push the lead to 39-29 just nine seconds into the stanza.
Towson would then mount an extended rally and scored 12 straight points to take a 41-39 lead with 15:07 left after five straight points from Mike Morsell. It was Towson's first lead since 11:04 remained in the opening half when the Tigers were ahead 16-15.
A key three-pointer from freshman
Eli Pemberton with 13:57 showing on the clock would put the Pride back in front and junior forward
Hunter Sabety added a free throw 40 seconds later to make it 43-41 heading into the under-12 media timeout.
Towson would then use an 8-0 run to take a 53-48 lead with 5:34 to play in regulation as William Adala Moto gave the Tigers their largest lead of the game.
The game would stay nearly a one-possession game the remainder of the way with Towson staying in front by as much six over the final few minutes.
A three-pointer from Wright-Foreman with 3:01 left cut the deficit to three, 59-56 and Hofstra closed to even one in the final minute as Pemberton hit a free throw with eight seconds left.
The Pride could never get over the hump, though, as Towson earned the hard-fought victory.
Senior
Deron Powers chipped in with nine points, six assists and three rebounds. Sabety had a team-high eight rebounds and added six points and four blocked shots.
Morman led Towson with 13 points and the Tigers also got 12 points and five rebounds from Morsell and 11 points and five rebounds from Adala Moto.
Hofstra returns to action on Saturday when it continues this two-game road trip at Northeastern. Tip-off is scheduled for 7 p.m.
NOTES
- Hofstra leads the all-time series with Towson, 39-26. The Tigers won both meetings this season.
- Today marked just the second time all season that Hofstra has placed only one player in double figures.
