MBB: Late Hofstra Run Gives Pride Season Sweep Of Northeastern

Boston, MA – Sophomore Justin Wright-Foreman showcased his status as one of the best scorers in the league as he poured in a game-high 25 points to lead the Hofstra Men's Basketball team to a 74-64 win over Northeastern on Saturday evening at Matthews Arena.

Hofstra also got 17 points from senior Brian Bernardi and 13 points, eight rebounds and four assists from freshman Eli Pemberton. Junior Rokas Gustys returned to the lineup after missing the last four games and was huge on the boards as he had a game-best 12 rebounds.

The win improves the Pride's record to 13-14 overall and 5-9 in Colonial Athletic Association play. Hofstra has won three of its last four games. Northeastern slips to 14-12 and 7-7 in league action.

A slow-moving first half would see the two teams go to the free throw line a combined 29 times and be whistled for 25 total fouls as the Huskies took a narrow 35-33 lead into the break.

Bernardi, who scored eight first half points, opened the scoring in the game in the first minute before Northeastern eventually put together an 11-3 run to lead 11-5 following a basket from Anthony Green at the 14:28 mark.

Hofstra immediately battled back and used an 8-4 run to retake the lead at 15-13 with 9:07 left before intermission on a dunk by junior Hunter Sabety

A three-pointer from Wright-Foreman gave Hofstra a five-point lead, 26-21, with just over four minutes left in the opening stanza. That was the Pride's largest advantage of the first 20 minutes. The Huskies would outscore the Pride, 9-2, over the final four minutes of the half to take the narrow two-point lead.

Both teams would have quick runs early on in the second half with Hofstra scoring five straight after Northeastern opened the scoring to even the score at 38. After the Huskies got back-to-back baskets, a Wright-Foreman dunk and a three-pointer from Pemberton would give the Pride a 45-44 lead with 15:20 left in regulation – Hofstra's first lead of the second half.

Neither squad could get any breathing room in the game with the largest lead over the next nearly nine minutes was a Hofstra three-pointer advantage at 56-53 with 7:51 left in regulation.

With the score tied at 60, Hofstra would put together an 8-0 scoring run to make it 68-60 with just over one minute left. The run was punctuated by a thunderous dunk from Wright-Foreman that forced Northeastern into calling a time out.

Northeastern would never recover and Hofstra was able to sink six free throws in the final minute to seal the 10-point victory.

T.J. Williams led Northeastern with 21 points and also added six rebounds and six assists. Alex Murphy tallied 13 points and seven rebounds for the Huskies.

Hofstra returns home for its next two games as it will host Charleston on Thursday at 7 p.m. before closing the week with a 4 p.m. game against UNCW on Saturday.
