MBB: Comeback Kids! Hofstra Rallies Past Drexel In Final Minute

Hempstead, NY - Trailing 77-67 with under a minute to play, Hofstra closed out the game on a 12-0 run to post a 79-77 victory over Drexel Saturday night at the David S. Mack Sports and Exhibition Complex. Justin Wright-Foreman's three-pointer from the right corner capped the comeback and proved to be the game-winning basket.

Hofstra, which trailed by as much as 13 in the second half, won for the second time in a row and is now 12-13 overall and 4-8 in the Colonial Athletic Association. Drexel lost its fourth straight game to fall to 8-17 overall and 2-10 in the CAA.

The Pride had four players score in double-figures led by 20 points each from Wright-Foreman and Deron Powers. Eli Pemberton added 16 points, while Brian Bernardi had 10. Powers added six assists and Hunter Sabety pulled down seven rebounds to go along with nine points.

Drexel led at the half, 37-34, following an opening 20 minutes that saw seven tie scores and four lead changes. With the score tied at nine, Hofstra went on a 10-2 run to take a 19-11 lead with 12:08 to go. Sabety started the run with a dunk, while Wright-Foreman closed it with a three from the left corner. But Drexel came back with nine straight points to take a 20-19 lead with 9:16 on the clock following a steal and layup from Kurk Lee. The Pride had an answer and came back with a 10-4 run over the next 2:46 to lead 29-24 with 6:01 remaining. Powers and Pemberton each had five points for the Pride in the spurt. The Dragons tied the game at 29 with five unanswered points – a three from Lee and a basket from Rodney Williams. Drexel went up 37-31 before a Bernardi three pulled the Pride within three, 37-34, with 1:10 to go. Neither team would score the rest of the way.

Kari Jonsson opened the second half with consecutive three-pointers for the Dragons as Drexel opened up a nine-point lead, 43-34, 52 seconds into the half. The Pride charged right back with seven straight points including five from Sabety to pull within two, 43-41, with 17:52 to go. Drexel went back up by eight, 51-43, with 15:11 on the clock. The Drexel lead would grow to as many as 13, 61-48, with 9:12 to go following a three-pointer from John Moran.

Powers and Wright-Foreman drained three-pointers on back-to-back possessions to get the Pride back to within seven, 61-54, with 8:22 to go. A Jamall Robinson three and a layup from Wright-Foreman made it a four-point game, 65-61, with 5:42 to go. The Dragons scored five straight points to go up by nine, 70-61, and led by 10 (77-67) with 1:15 to go. But three's from Pemberton and Bernardi brought Hofstra to within four, 77-73, with 38 seconds to go. Drexel missed two free throws and Powers was fouled on the other end and hit both for a two-point deficit with 24 ticks on the clock. After an offensive foul gave the Pride the ball back, Wright-Foreman drilled a three from the right corner that proved to be the game-winner. Pemberton capped off the game-ending run with a free throw.

Rodney Williams had 26 points for Drexel to lead all scorers and also added eight rebounds. Lee had 19 points, seven rebounds and five assists before fouling out, while Austin Williams had 16 points.  

Hofstra is back in action Thursday, February 9, when it travels to Towson. Game time is set for 7 p.m.

NOTES:
-Hofstra had a season-high 14 three-pointers in the game
-Hofstra and Drexel split the season series, though Drexel still leads the all-time series 46-39
