BB: Big Eighth Inning Lifts Hofstra Over Southern

Thibodaux, LA - Hofstra broke open a scoreless game with four runs in the eighth and then held off a rally from Southern in the bottom of the inning to grind out a 4-2 win Friday afternoon at Ray E. Didier Field in the third game of The Mardi Gras Invitational.

The win was Hofstra's second in a row and improved the Pride's record to 2-4 on the season. Southern fell to 1-4 with the loss.

Hofstra pitcher Jorge Marrero (1-0) three seven scoreless innings, allowing five hits while striking out six in his first start in a Hofstra uniform. The graduate transfer from Florida Atlantic gave up just five singles and walked one batter in a 99-pitch effort.

Daniel Franklin (0-2) matched Marrero for the Jaguars, as he did not allow a run in his first seven innings. He was aided by three double plays that ended Pride threats. But in the eighth, Hofstra took advantage of an error to score four times. Sean Rausch started the inning by reaching on the error and went to second on a bunt single from Mikey Riesner. After a sacrifice bunt moved the runners and a walk loaded the bases, Jacob Snyder came on in relief of Franklin. Snyder uncorked a wild pitch that allowed Rausch to score and after a strikeout and a walk that loaded the bags, Nick Bottari continued his hot hitting with a three-run double to stake the Pride to a 4-0 lead. Bottari has six hits in his last nine at-bats and has driven in five runs over his last two games.

Chris Weiss came on to relieve Marrero in the bottom of the eight and walked the bases loaded around a strikeout. That prompted a pitching change as Michael James came in and gave up a two-run double to John Pope before escaping any further damage. James would then strike out the side in the ninth to earn his first save.

Bottari finished 2-4 with three RBIs on the day. Riesner also was 2-4 with a double and a run scored.

Franklin allowed five hits and three unearned runs for Southern.
