BB: Hofstra Picks Up First Win Of 2017 At Nicholls State

Thibodaux, LA - John Rooney pitched five shutout innings without allowing a hit and the Hofstra offense erupted for 10 runs and 18 hits as the Pride picked up their first win of the season with a 10-3 victory over host Nicholls State at The Mardi Gras Invitational Thursday night.

Nick Bottari paced the Hofstra offense with four hits, two runs and two RBIs. Sean Rausch had three hits on the night, while five other Pride batters collected two hits. In all, eight of Hofstra's nine batters had hits in the game.

The Pride (1-4) went up 3-0 before Nicholls State (2-3) had a chance to bat. Steven Foster led off with a single followed by a walk to Brad Witkowski. Nick Bottari brought both runners home with a double and then took third on the throw home. Vito Friscia followed with a sacrifice fly to score Bottari with the third run.

The score stayed that way until the fifth when the Pride tacked on a run on a Teddy Cillis RBI single. Sean Rausch added an RBI double in the sixth and then Hofstra would score four more times in the seventh. The big blow was a three-run home run off the bat of Mikey Riesner. Cillis started the scoring in the inning with another RBI single. Hofstra added a 10th run in the ninth on a passed ball.

Rooney (1-1) struck out six and walked four in his 80-pitch performance. Andrew Mundy allowed three unearned runs on three hits in three innings, while Seamus Brazill pitched a scoreless ninth, escaping trouble with a double play before striking out the final batter of the game.

The Colonels did not record a hit until the seventh and scored all three runs in the eighth. Gavin Wehby drove in two of the Nicholls State runs with a double. Brian Taylor (0-1) started for Nicholls State and allowed three runs on four hits in two innings of work.

Hofstra will be back in action tomorrow at 10:30 a.m. (Central time) against Southern University.
