WLAX: Hofstra Clips Seahawks To Move To 2-0 On Season

Hempstead, NY – Freshman Alyssa Parrella posted six points (3G, 3A), junior Drew Shapiro added four points (3G, 1A) and senior Becky Conto chipped in with three goals and five draw controls as the Hofstra Women's Lacrosse team defeated Wagner College, 14-10, in the Pride's home opener on Tuesday afternoon at James M. Shuart Stadium.

The win moves Hofstra to 2-0 this season, while Wagner falls to 0-2.

Hofstra is 2-0 for the second time in three years as the 2015 squad also began the year with a pair of victories.

Similar to the Pride's season opener at Bucknell, the opponent got on the board first before a huge Hofstra run completely changed the contest.

Trailing 1-0 just 13 seconds into the contest, a goal from Shapiro at the 29:34 mark would start a 6-0 spurt for the Pride that made it 6-1 in favor of Hofstra with 21 minutes left before intermission. Five different goal scorers found the back of the net for the Pride during the run with Parrella accounting for two goals.

Wagner gradually chipped away and closed the gap to 6-5 as Lauren Ednie scored off a free-position shot with 13:03 left in the opening stanza. Hofstra would take a three-goal lead into the break, though, as junior Carlee Ancona, Shapiro and Conto each scored in the final 7:30 of the half.

With the score 9-7 in favor of the Pride early in the second stanza, Hofstra would position itself for the win as they used a 3-0 run to make it 12-7 with 18:26 remaining in regulation. It was the same cast of characters for the Pride as Shapiro started the run and sophomore Lexi Lenaghan and Conto also added tallies.

The teams would alternate goals over the final 13 minutes as Hofstra would finish off the win.

Lenaghan finished with two goals and an assist for the Pride, which also got a pair of goals from Ancona. Junior Shea McAvoy posted three ground balls, three draw controls and three caused turnovers for Hofstra. Parrella led Hofstra with four ground balls as well, in addition to posting two caused turnovers.

Sophomore Maddie Fields had six saves to earn her second win of the season. Kelsey Fee posted eight saves for the Seahawks.

Ednie had three goals and an assist for Wagner, while Anna Belle Reilly posted three goals for the Seahawks. Ednie also had five draw controls and three caused turnovers.

Hofstra returns to action on Saturday when it travels to Fairfield for a 3 p.m. contest.
