WLAX: Hofstra Suffers First Loss Of Season To Fairfield

Fairfield, CT – Freshman Alyssa Parrella had eight points on seven goals and one assist, but it was not enough as the Hofstra Women's Lacrosse team dropped a 19-14 decision to Fairfield on Saturday afternoon.

The loss was Hofstra's first of the season and drops the Pride's record to 2-1 in 2017. Fairfield is now 1-3 this year.

It was all Hofstra early on as the Pride jumped out to a 5-2 lead as sophomore Lexi Lenaghan scored the Pride's first two goals of the game in the contest's first eight minutes. The score was knotted at two before Hofstra got three straight goals, including Parrella's first with 16:05 left in the opening stanza to make it 5-2.

Fairfield would respond with five straight goals to lead 7-5 and then would push it to 9-6 with 4:35 left before intermission on a goal from Brenna Connolly. Hofstra was able to close the gap to one, 9-8, at the break as Parrella closed the half with a pair of goals in the final four minutes.

With the game tied at nine early in the second half, the Stags would score five of the next seven goals to open up a 14-11 lead following a tally from Kathleen Hulseman with 16:11 left in regulation.

Another Parrella goal later in the half would make it 15-13 in favor of the home team as Hofstra looked to mount a comeback. But Fairfield would end any hopes of a Pride rally as they closed the game on a 4-1 scoring run to earn the victory.

Lenaghan finished with three goals for Hofstra, which also got two goals and an assist from junior Drew Shapiro. Junior Carlee Ancona dished out three assists in the game.

Parrella added four draw controls, three ground balls and two caused turnovers, while junior Shea McAvoy had four ground balls to lead the way.

Hellstein finished with eight points on seven goals and one assist for Fairfield. She also added seven draw controls and three ground balls. Connolly added three goals and four assists.

Hofstra returns to action a week from today when it hosts #2 Maryland. First draw control from James M. Shuart Stadium is scheduled for 1 p.m.
