Lewisburg, PA – Freshman
Alyssa Parrella had five goals and two assists in her collegiate debut to lead the Hofstra Women's Lacrosse team to a convincing 15-5 victory over Bucknell in the Pride's season opener on Saturday afternoon at Graham Field.
The win improves Hofstra's record to 1-0, while Bucknell suffered its first defeat of the season and falls to 2-1.
Sophomore
Lexi Lenaghan had a career-best four goals and added an assist for a career-high five points, while junior
Drew Shapiro tied her career-high with three goals (also added an assist).
Bucknell opened the scoring just over a minute into the game before Hofstra exploded for seven straight goals to lead by six with 13:14 remaining in the opening half. Parrella scored the Pride's first goal of the game and added two more during the run to give Hofstra the commanding lead.
The Bison would cut the deficit to four with a pair of goals until Parrella added another tally with a little more than four minutes left in the first half to push the halftime advantage to five goals.
Shapiro and Lenaghan would score in the first five minutes of the second half to push the lead to seven goals and put the Pride well on its way to a rout of the Bison.
Bucknell got goals from Maddy Molinari and Bridget Shaffrey over the next five minutes before Hofstra dominated the final 15 minutes of the game and closed the contest with five unanswered goals to capture the easy victory.
Sophomore
Maddie Fields played all 60 minutes for the Pride in net and tallied seven saves. Jamie DeWitt had eight saves for Bucknell.
Freshman
Darcie Smith posted six ground balls in her debut, while junior
Carlee Ancona had a goal and two assists and senior
Becky Conto chipped in with two goals.
Fields added four ground balls and three caused turnovers for the Pride, which also got strong defensive games from junior
Shea McAvoy (five ground balls and four caused turnovers) and sophomore
Rachel Gregory (two ground balls and two caused turnovers).
Molinari led Bucknell with two goals.
Hofstra returns to action on Tuesday for its home opener against Wagner. First draw control from James M. Shuart Stadium is scheduled for 2 p.m.
NOTES
- Hofstra improved to 8-5 all-time against Bucknell. It was the first meeting between the schools since an 18-10 Pride victory in 1995.
- The 10-goal differential was the Pride's first win by at least 10 goals since a 17-5 victory over Central Connecticut State on March 1, 2014.
- The 15 goals were the most for Hofstra since a 15-11 win over New Hampshire on February 14, 2015.
