BB: Hofstra Falls At No. 36 Southeastern Louisiana

Hammond, Louisiana - Southeastern Louisiana broke open a 1-0 game with a six-run fifth inning and went on to defeat Hofstra, 11-1, in seven innings at the Tangi Tourism Baseball Classic at Alumni Field.

The 36th-ranked Lions won their season opener after getting rained out Friday night. Hofstra slipped to 0-2 onn the season.

Scottie Sanders hit a solo home run to lead off the bottom of the third inning. Lions starter Mac Sceroler pitched as though that would be all he needed. The junior went five innings, allowing no hits or walks with 11 strikeouts. But the Southeastern Louisiana offense erupted in the bottom of the fifth. Two walks and an error loaded the bases for Daniel Wasinger, who delivered a two-run single. After a double steal plated another run and a walk that put runners on first and second, Taylor Schwaner drove home two runs with a triple to right center. Schwaner would score one batter later when Drew Avans doubled. 

The Lions went to the bullpen to start the sixth, turning to Derrick Mount. Pride freshman Vinnie Costello broke up the no-hitter and the shutout with his first career home run, a two-out solo shot to left. Steven Foster followed with a double, but was stranded at second. 

Schwaner drove in two more runs with a single for the Lions in a four-run sixth. Two more runs scored on a pair of errors in the inning. Schwaner finished with three hits and four RBIs on the day. 

Chris Weiss started for the Pride and took the loss after allowing three runs (two earned) on three hits in four innings of work. Weiss had five strikeouts in his four innings. Sceroler got the win for the Lions.

Brad Witkowski had Hofstra's other hit, a single in the seventh.

Hofstra will finish play at the weekend tournament Sunday at 5 p.m. (CST) when it takes on 14th-ranked Louisiana Lafayette. 

Notes:

-Hofstra has scored two runs this season, both on solo home runs.
-Foster and Witkowski have hit safely in Hofstra's first two games.
