WBB: Hofstra Cruises Past Iona, 68-43

New Rochelle, N.Y. – Sophomore Marianne Kalin posted her first career double-double as the Hofstra Women's Basketball team breezed past Iona, 68-43, on Thursday night at the Hynes Athletic Center.

The Pride (5-4) got back in the win column, as Iona (0-7) remained winless on the season. Kalin broke the 20-point threshold for the first time in her career, finishing with 25 points and 11 rebounds, as senior Olivia Askin tied a career best with 18 points. Senior Ashunae Durant posted eight rebounds, while sophomore E'Lexus Davis chipped in six assists.

Kalin scored as many points as Iona in the first quarter, as Hofstra ended the opening frame with a 23-10 lead. Eight of Kalin's points came in the paint, and classmate Sandra Karsten hit a jumper at the buzzer for the 13-point advantage for the Pride, as Hofstra shot 62.5 percent in the first quarter. The sides exchanged baskets to open the game, before senior Olivia Askin made a three-pointer to give the Pride a 7-2 lead. Iona made it 9-4 with a Treyanna Clay jumper, but that was the closest the Gaels would come for the remainder of the game.

Askin dropped two early threes in the second quarter as the Pride's offense continued to fire. Hofstra took a 39-20 lead into the break, with both Kalin and Askin with double figures.

Askin hit another early three in the third frame, before classmate Aleana Leon came up with a steal and cashed in on the fast-break layup for a 48-20 Pride lead. Kalin gave the Hofstra a 30-point advantage with a layup of her own. The Pride cruised into the fourth quarter with a 57-26 lead. Kalin added seven more points in the final frame as Hofstra capped off the 68-43 victory.

The Pride stays on the road, heading to another local rival, Columbia, on Monday for a 7 p.m. contest. The game will be Hofstra's last before a 10-day hiatus for final exams.

Notes:
-Askin's double-figure performance was her third straight, the longest such streak of her career.
-Hofstra posted 17 assists as a team, with Leon adding five.
-The last time the Pride held an opponent to fewer than 50 points and the last time Hofstra won by at least 20 points was Nov. 22, 2016, in a 64-44 win over Delaware State.
