New York, N.Y. – The Hofstra Women's Basketball team fell to Columbia, 75-53, on Monday night at Levien Gymnasium.
With only seven active players, the Pride (5-5) hung with Columbia (6-6) in the first half, until the Lions used a big third-quarter run to take the win. Sophomore
Marianne Kalin finished with 15 points and nine rebounds while senior
Olivia Askin chipped in 13 points and sophomore E'Lexus Davis finished with 11. Freshman
Mie Hoff posted double-digit rebounds for the first time in her career, leading Hofstra with 10.
Camille Zimmerman led Columbia with 24 points and 13 rebounds, while Riley Casey added 16 points and Maya Sampleton finished with 12.
After Columbia took a 4-0 lead, senior
Aleana Leon took matters into her own hands to knot the score at four. The Lions took the lead back, 8-4, with four straight free throws, but Askin cut it back to one with a three-pointer. Kalin gave the Pride its first lead, 9-8, with a bank shot off the glass. Columbia, however, outscored Hofstra, 11-6, over the final five minutes of the quarter to take a 19-15 lead into the second.
Back-to-back layups from Kalin to knotted the score at 19 in the early goings of the second quarter. Davis pulled down an offensive rebound and was fouled on her shot, hitting both free throws to give the Pride the lead back, 21-19. Columbia took the lead back, 29-25, but Askin cashed in from the left wing to cut it back to a one-point game before a layup from Leon gave Hofstra the advantage once again. After the Lions had regained the lead, sophomore
Petja Krupenko drained a long-range jumper to put the Pride ahead, 32-31, at the half.
Kalin was responsible for the first points of the third quarter as well, before Columbia went on a 24-4 run to take a 55-38 lead into the final stanza. Askin drained a three in the fourth to push into double figures for the fourth straight game, but the Lions continued to push their lead for the final 75-53 score line.
Hofstra will now take a 10-day hiatus for final exams, returning to action on Dec. 21 to take on St. Bonaventure at 2 p.m. at the David S. Mack Sports and Exhibition Complex.
Notes:
-Askin took her first career free throws as the result of a flagrant foul, playing over 1100 minutes before her first trip to the charity stripe.
-Kalin finished in double figures for the second straight game.
-Askin added a career-high five assists.
-Hofstra has shot over 40 percent from the field in five straight games.
