WBB: Hofstra's Fourth-Quarter Rally Falls Short In Loss To Siena

Hempstead, NY – Sophomore E'Lexus Davis scored a game-high 18 points and senior Olivia Askin added 14 to lead four Hofstra players in double-figures, but Siena went on a late fourth quarter run to stymie a Pride rally and defeat Hofstra, 70-60, at the David S. Mack Sports and Exhibition Complex Monday night.

The Pride, who rallied back from a 10-point deficit after three quarters, is now 4-4 on the season. Siena evens its record at 4-4 this season.

Davis, who fell one point shy of equaling her career-high of 19 points, was 7-for-14 from the field and led the Pride in scoring for the first time this season. Askin was 5-for-10 from the field including 4-of-9 from the three-point line. Senior Aleana Leon sparked the Pride's fourth quarter comeback and finished with 12 points and six rebounds while classmate Ashunae Durant recorded her third double-double of the season and 35th of her career with 10 points and a season-high 14 rebounds.

Siena, which also had four players in double-figures, was led by sophomore Maddie Sims with 15 points while senior Aaliyah Jones added 13 points. Junior Deja Rawls and sophomore Sabrina Piper each added 11 points.

Siena scored nine of the game's first 11 points to take a 9-2 lead after a Sims lay-up with 5:57 to play. But the Pride chipped away and closed to within two at 13-11 on Davis' three-point play with 1:41 to play in the first quarter. Siena hit three free throws in the final 26 seconds to end the period up, 16-11.

After the Pride opened the second quarter with a three-pointer by Sica Cuzic and a layup by Durant around a Rawls free throw to close to gap to 17-16 at the 6:04 mark, the Saints went on a 7-0 run including a three-pointer by Piper to open up a 24-16 lead with 3:17 to play in the half. After exchanging baskets, the Pride scored five of the final seven points on an Askin three-pointer and a Durant layup to close the half down 28-23. Askin had eight points while Durant had six points and eight rebounds for the Pride in the first 20 minutes.

Hofstra picked up where they left off in the second scoring seven of the first nine points to tie the game to 30-all after a Davis free throw at the 7:14 mark. But Siena went on a 12-3 run capped by a Kollyns Scarborough layup with 3:14 to play in the third.  The Pride closed to within six at 44-38 after an Askin three-pointer with 52 seconds to play. But the Saints added a free throw by Sims with four seconds to play and a buzzer-beating three-pointer by Jones to boost their lead to 48-38 after three quarters.

The Pride mounted two rallies in the final quarter. Hofstra outscored the Saints, 7-1 over the first 2:35 to close to within four at 49-45 with 7:25 to play after two Durant free throws. After the Saints tallied six of the next eight points to boost their lead to 55-47 following a Piper lay-up at the 6:02 mark, Hofstra rallied behind six straight points from Leon and a Davis lay-up to take a 56-55 lead with 4:32 to play.

After Aaliyah Jones hit a three-pointer for Siena and Davis scored on a spinning lay-up for the Pride to tie the game at 58, Karolina Severova's three-pointer at the 3:13 mark started a 12-2 Siena run that sealed the victory for the visiting Saints.

Hofstra will return to action on Thursday, December 7 when the Pride travel to New Rochelle, NY to face the Gaels of Iona at the Hynes Center. Game time is 7 p.m.
