Marianne Kalin scored a team-high 11 points, but James Madison pulled away in the third quarter to post a 55-42 win over Hofstra Friday night at the David S. Mack Sports and Exhibition Complex in the Colonial Athletic Association opener for both teams. The Dukes used a 7-0 run to turn a three-point lead into a 10-point lead that the Pride could not overcome.
Hofstra saw its record even at 6-6 overall and 0-1 in the CAA with the loss. The Dukes moved to 5-7 overall and 1-0 in league play with the win.
Kalin was the only Hofstra player in double-figures.
Aleana Leon finished with eight points, while
Boogie Brozoski and
E'Lexus Davis each had six.
Ashunae Durant had a team-high nine rebounds.
Hofstra held an 11-6 lead midway through the first quarter before the Dukes went on a 9-0 run to close the stanza to take a 15-11 advantage after the opening 10 minutes. Kamiah Smalls had six points for the Dukes in the quarter, while Kalin had four points for the Pride.
The Pride scored the first five points of the second quarter to take a 16-15 lead 1:02 into the stanza. But James Madison outscored the Pride, 13-7, the rest of the way and took a 28-23 lead into the halftime break. The Dukes shot 34 percent in the opening 20 minutes compared to 30 percent for the Pride. The Dukes also capitalized on Hofstra's eight first half turnovers, scoring seven points off of them. Brozoski scored six points to lead the Pride in scoring in the half. Smalls added four more points in the second quarter for 10 at the break to pace James Madison.
The Pride got to within three, 32-29, with 8:42 to go in the third quarter on a pair of Davis free throws, but the Dukes responded with a 7-0 run to take a 39-29 lead with 5:16 to play on Lexie Barrier's three-pointer. The lead would grow to 11 as the Dukes led 45-34 at the end of the quarter.
The fourth quarter saw James Madison build a 16-point lead, its largest of the game, with 3:40 to play on a jumper by Smalls that made the score 55-39. The Dukes would not score again the rest of the way, but Hofstra managed just three points of its own during that stretch. Â
Smalls led all scorers with 18 points and added six rebounds. Barrier posted 13 points while Kelly Koshuta tallied 10 points and a game-high 10 rebounds for the Dukes.
Hofstra will be back in action Sunday afternoon with a New Year's Eve matinee at Drexel University. Game time in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, is set for 2 p.m.
