Uniondale, NY - Hofstra junior guard
Justin Wright-Foreman extended his double-figure point scoring streak to 34 games, but top-ranked Villanova used a scoring run midway through the first half to pull away and post a 95-71 victory over the Pride Friday night at NYCB Live, home of the Nassau Veterans Memorial Coliseum.
Wright-Foreman had a game-high 25 points in extending his streak, which ranks eighth in the nation. Senior forward
Rokas Gustys joined Wright-Foreman in double figures with 11 points and added eight rebounds. Â
One of the game's prevailing storylines was Hofstra facing off against its former head coach Jay Wright for the first time since his departure 16 years ago. Wright, who is a member of the Hofstra Athletics Hall of Fame as a member of the 2000 team, coached Hofstra from 1994 to 2001. In his first head coaching job, he led Hofstra to 122 victories and NCAA Tournament appearances in 2000 and 2001, as well as an NIT appearance in 1999.
The Pride held early lead of 5-2, 7-4 and the last at 9-7 4:31 into the game following a Gustys layup. The Wildcats led, 17-16, with 12:23 to play in the opening half when it used a 12-0 run to open up a 13-point advantage, 29-16, with 9:18 on the clock. Hofstra would cut the deficit to 10, 31-21, on a three-pointer from Wright-Foreman with 8:08 to play before the Wildcats outscored the Pride, 21-10, the rest of the way to take a 52-31 lead at the half.
Villanova would extend the lead to 26 early in the second half before the Pride whittled the advantage to 19 on a Wright-Foreman three-pointer. A
Kenny Wormley layup with 10:02 to play brought the Pride within 18, 73-55, but that was as close as the Pride would get.
Villanova, which entered the game ranked 21st in the nation in three-point percentage at .409, enjoyed a hot-shooting night as the Wildcats connected on 16 of 34 shots (47 percent) from beyond the arc. Villanova's balanced scoring saw five players in double figures led by Mikal Bridges 20 points. Omari Spellman added 19 points and a game-high 10 rebounds. Phil Booth tallied 17 points, while Donte DiVincenzo had 16 points. Jalen Brunson was the fifth Wildcat in double-digits as he had 14 points and added seven assists.
The game marked the final non-conference game of the season for the Pride, which returns to action, following a short break for Christmas, on December 30 at Colonial Athletic Association foe William & Mary. Game time in Williamsburg, Virginia, is set for 4 p.m.
