Williamsburg, VA – Junior
Justin Wright-Foreman scored a career-high 36 points and added four assists and four rebounds, but William & Mary overcame a three-point deficit with 53 seconds left to capture a 90-87 victory over the Hofstra Men's Basketball team on Saturday afternoon at Kaplan Arena.
Hofstra falls to 7-6 overall and 0-1 in Colonial Athletic Association play with the loss, while William & Mary improved to 8-4 and 1-0 in conference.
A three-pointer from sophomore
Eli Pemberton with just under nine minutes left in the opening stanza made in 25-24 in favor of the Tribe before William & Mary used a 14-2 run to open a 39-26 lead with 3:32 left following two free throws from Rowley. Hofstra would own the remainder of the first half, though, as the Pride used a 13-4 run to make it 43-39 with 1:27 to play before intermission. Wright-Foreman led the Pride spurt with eight points during that run.
William & Mary pushed its largest to seven, 52-45, with 17:55 left in regulation before Hofstra began to mount its comeback. The Pride would gradually chip away at the deficit before eventually getting back-to-back buckets from Wright-Foreman to take a 67-65 advantage with just over eight minutes left in the second half.
The lead would stay in the Pride's favor and a pair of free throws from Wright-Foreman with 53 seconds left made it 85-82. After a three-pointer from W&M's Connor Burchfield with 24 seconds left, Wright-Foreman added another basket to push the score to 87-85. At that point Burchfield drained another shot from beyond the arc with eight seconds left to give the Tribe the lead for good before William & Mary added a pair of late free throws to account for the final score. After the last Burchfield three-pointer, Hofstra did have one final chance but a driving layup from junior
Kenny Wormley was blocked.
Pemberton added 10 points, while senior
Hunter Sabety tallied seven points, four rebounds and three blocks off the bench for the Pride. Nathan Knight had 31 points, 11 rebounds and eight blocks for William & Mary, which also got 26 points and seven assists from David Cohn.
Hofstra continues its two-game road swing to start conference play on Tuesday when it heads to Boston to face Northeastern at 7 p.m.
