MBB: Late Rally Falls Short For Hofstra In Loss To Manhattan

Garden City, NY - Justin Wright-Foreman scored a game-high 22 points and Rokas Gustys added 10 points and 13 rebounds, but it was not enough as Manhattan notched a 63-61 victory over the Pride at the Center for Recreation and Sport at Adelphi University. Hofstra rallied from an eight-point deficit in the final minute to make it a one-point game.

Hofstra, which saw a four-game win streak snapped, fell to 7-4 on the season. The Jaspers moved to 5-6 on the year.

In addition to Wright-Foreman and Gustys, the Pride also received 11 points and eight rebounds from Eli Pemberton. Aaron Walker Jr. led Manhattan with 17 points, while Zavier Turner added 13 points.

Hofstra used a 9-0 run to start the second half to take a 36-33 lead, its first since a first half 14-12 advantage. But the Jaspers answered with four straight points to retake the lead, 37-36, with 13:35 to play. The Pride would reclaim the lead, 41-40, with 10:30 on the clock following a fast break dunk from Kenny Wormley. Manhattan ran off the next 10 points to take a 50-41 lead with 6:18 to play on a Turner bucket. A three-point play from Pemberton stopped the Jaspers run and a dunk from Gustys pulled the Pride within five, 51-46, with 4:46 to play. Manhattan led by eight, 62-54, with 46 ticks left before the Pride put together a last-gasp rally. Jalen Ray hit a three-pointer and after a pair of missed free throws from Manhattan, Pemberton hit two-of-three from the line to make it a 62-59 game.

Leading by three with 30 seconds left, Manhattan drew a foul but then was called for a deadball technical foul. The Jaspers missed both of their free throws and Wright-Foreman hit both of the technical free throws to cut the Pride's deficit to one, 62-61, with 29 seconds to play. But on their ensuing possession, Hofstra missed a three-point shot and then after a Manhattan free throw, the Pride turned the ball over on the final possession.

The teams played a low-scoring first half that saw the Jaspers take a 33-27 lead into the locker room. Manhattan used a 14-4 run to turn a 12-12 tie into a 26-16 lead with 5:57 to go on a pair of free throws from Calvin Crawford. Hofstra responded with a 7-0 run behind four points from Wright-Foreman (15 first half points) and three from Desure Buie to cut the deficit to three, 26-23, with 5:08 remaining. The Jaspers would outscore the Pride, 7-4, down the stretch to hold the six-point halftime advantage.

Pauly Paulicap had a team-best nine rebounds for Manhattan and added a career-best six blocks.

Hofstra is back in action Friday night when it takes on top-ranked Villanova and former coach Jay Wright at the Nassau Veterans Memorial Coliseum presented by NYCB. Tip-off is scheduled for 8:30 p.m.
