WBB: Hofstra Guts Out Double-Overtime Win At Sacred Heart

Fairfield, Conn. – Sophomore E'Lexus Davis scored a career-high 19 points, including nine in the second extra frame, as Hofstra took down Sacred Heart, 86-81, in a double-overtime battle on Thursday night at the William H. Pitt Center.

The first overtime decided nothing, as the teams entered the second extra frame knotted at 70. Davis gave the Pride (4-3) the lead with a layup. After the Pioneers (2-4) had pushed ahead, Davis powered through with two more layups, before senior Olivia Askin knocked down a long-range shot that gave the Pride the lead and classmate Ashunae Durant converted on a three-point play, making a free throw after she was fouled on a made shot for an 83-80 lead that Hofstra wouldn't again relinquish.

Both teams finished with four players in double figures, with Hofstra getting double-doubles from Durant and senior Aleana Leon. Durant finished with 23 points and 12 rebounds, while Leon chipped in 12 points and a career-high 12 boards. In addition to Davis's 19, Askin dropped 16. Katherine Haines posted a double-double for the Pioneers (23 points, 10 rebounds), while Candice Leatherwood (21 points), Erin Storck (11 points) and Tykera Carter (10 points) also finished in double figures.

The Pride jumped out to an early 6-0 lead, making all three of its first field goals with sophomore Marianne Kalin coming up with a steal and a block on the other end, prompting Sacred Heart to call a timeout just 1:09 into the contest. The Pioneers knotted the score at 11 with back-to-back three-pointers midway through the stanza. The Pride then took the lead back by as much as six, but a late trey left the Pioneers within three, 17-14, at the end of the quarter.

A pair of layups put Sacred Heart ahead early in the second, and the Pride spent much of the quarter building as much as a 10-point lead, but an 11-0 Pioneers run spanning into the third quarter put Scared Heart up, 31-30. The teams traded baskets throughout the third frame, heading into the final stanza tied at 47.

Senior Olivia Askin drained a three to give the Pride the lead early in the fourth, with sophomore E'Lexus Davis adding one of her own to push the advantage to 53-49. Another trey from Askin pushed the lead to 61-53, but an 8-0 Sacred Heart run knotted the score at 61 with under two minutes to play. The teams exchanged baskets and misses, leaving the score tied at 63 at the end of regulation.

Hofstra returns home to the David S. Mack Sports and Exhibition Complex on Monday to host Siena at 7 p.m.
