Aleana Leon scored a game-high 20 points and grabbed seven rebounds and sophomore
Marianne Kalin added 16 points to lead the Hofstra Pride to a 55-46 victory over the Fordham Rams at Rose Hill Gymnasium in an exhibition game to benefit hurricane relief in Puerto Rico.
The Pride shot 41% (22-54) from the field including 39% (5-13) from the three-point line in the contest. The Rams were led by G'mrice Davis and Lauren Holden with 16 points each. Davis also had a game-high 13 rebounds.
Hofstra tallied 10 of the first 14 points in the contest behind eight points from Leon before taking a 14-9 lead after the first quarter. The Pride extended the lead by halftime to 27-14 while holding the Rams to just five points in the second quarter. Leon had 14 points and six rebounds while
E'Lexus Davis added six points.
In the third quarter, the Pride opened up their biggest lead of the contest at 36-17 after two free throws by Leon with 7:02 to play in the period. The Rams chipped away but still trailed by 14 at 45-31 after three quarters.
Fordham rallied in the fourth quarter, going on a 15-6 run over the first 7:35 of the period to close to within five at 51-46 with 2:25 to play after a Halei Gillis free throw. But Leon and
Marianne Kalin followed with lay-ups in the final minute to seal the Pride victory.
Hofstra opens the 2017-18 regular season on Sunday, November 12 when the Pride host the Retrievers of the University of Maryland Baltimore County (UMBC) at the David S. - Admission to the exhibition was free, but donations were accepted at the entrance with all proceeds going to Unidos Por Puerto Rico, a charity begun to provide aid to those affected by the recent storms. The Harry Vanderslice Memorial Foundation, an organization founded in memory of Fordham Head Coach Stephanie Gaitley's late father, matched donation receipts up to a total of $1,000.
