WBB: Hofstra Pulls Away In Fourth Quarter In Season-Opening Win Over UMBC

Hempstead, NY - Sophomore E'Lexus Davis had career-highs with 17 points, eight rebounds and nine assists, while classmate Sandra Karsten added a career-best 14 points to lead Hofstra to a season-opening 71-55 win over UMBC Sunday afternoon at the David S. Mack Sports and Exhibition Complex. Senior Ashunae Durant had a game-high 18 points and 13 rebounds for the Pride.  

The Pride (1-0) outscored the Retrievers (0-2), 10-2, over the final 4:46 of the third quarter to take a 50-45 lead at the end of 30 minutes of play. Hofstra got three-pointers from senior Olivia Askin, Karsten and Davis in the spurt. The Pride would not relinquish the lead and used a 15-0 run in the fourth quarter to open up a 69-51 lead with 2:38 to play.

Hofstra held a 19-17 lead after the first quarter behind six points from Davis and five from Durant. The Pride shot 50-percent from the field (8-16) in the opening 10 minutes. A 7-0 run by UMBC gave the Retrievers a 26-22 lead midway through the second quarter. Trailing, 28-25, the Pride used a 6-0 run to take a 31-28 lead with just over two minutes to play. The Pride would keep the lead the rest of the quarter and led, 34-33 at the break. Karsten had six of her nine points first half points in the second quarter.

Te'y Jah Olivier scored 17 points to pace UMBC, while Janee'a Summers tallied a double-double with 11 points and 11 rebounds.

Hofstra returns to action Tuesday night at 7 p.m. when it hosts Long Island rival Stony Brook at the Mack Sports Complex.

Notes:
-Durant's double-double was the 33rd of her career.
-The win was Hofstra's third consecutive season-opening victory.
-Hofstra is now 3-4 all-time in the series against UMBC, in the first meeting between the two schools since 1997-98.
-Karsten did most of her damage from beyond the arc, sinking 4-of-5 three-pointers.
-Sophomore Marianne Kalin had a career-high three blocks for the Pride.
-Senior Aleana Leon tallied eight points and nine rebounds, while Askin chipped in with eight points.
