WBB: Hofstra Falls To Stony Brook In Local Battle

Hempstead, NY – Three Hofstra players scored in double-figures, but the visiting Seawolves went on a big run late in the first quarter, and the Pride never caught up as Stony Brook recorded a 73-49 victory over Hofstra in a non-conference game at the David S. Mack Sports and Exhibition Complex on Tuesday night.

Hofstra is now 1-1 on the season while the Seawolves improve to 2-0. Senior Ashunae Durant led the Pride with 13 points and seven rebounds while classmate Aleana Leon and sophomore Sandra Karsten each added 10. The Seawolves were led by juniors Jerell Matthews with 21 points and Shania Johnson with 13 points. Stony Brook shot 50 percent (27-54) from the field including a sizzling 65 percent in the first half.

The first quarter started out slow with three lead changes and four tied scores, the last at 8-8 after a Karsten layup for the Pride with 4:39 to play. But the Seawolves, who hit 8 of 12 shots (67 percent) in the first period, went on a 15-3 run the rest of the way and held the Pride without a field goal over the last four minutes to open up a 23-11 lead after one quarter. Johnson hit three three-pointers in the final 4:20 to open up the score for Stony Brook.

Hofstra's Olivia Askin opened the second quarter with a three-pointer but the Seawolves then went on a 16-0 run to open up a 39-14 lead with 3:52 to play in the half. Stony Brook held on to a 25-point advantage at 44-19 at the break, shooting 65 percent (17-26) from the field, including five for-eight from the three-point line in the first 20 minutes.

The Pride hit on 6-of-17 shots in the third but could not get the deficit under 20 points. Stony Brook's Gio Perez hit a running jumper in the lane in the waning seconds of the period to equal their biggest lead of the contest at 61-35 after three quarters. The Seawolves boosted their lead to 33 in the fourth quarter before the Pride closed to 73-49 at the final buzzer.
