Sanne Maring had a career-best 17 kills to lead a spirted Pride comeback as the Hofstra Volleyball team rallied from a two sets to one deficit in the match to defeat UNCW in five sets on Sunday afternoon at Hanover Hall. Set scores were 25-21, 20-25, 17-25, 25-23 and 15-10 in favor of the Pride.
Hofstra improved to 14-10 and 6-4 in league play with the win, while UNCW slips to 8-15 and 2-9 in Colonial Athletic Association action. Sophomore
Luisa Sydlik posted her team-leading seventh double-double of the season with 51 assists and a career-tying and match-high 17 digs.
The Pride took the first set as sophomore
Laura Masciullo tallied nine kills in the opening stanza. The Seahawks immediately rebounded and would take the lead in the match as they hit well over .300 in both the second and third sets to put them on the brink of victory. A narrow win by Hofstra in the fourth set sent the contest to a decisive fifth set, where Hofstra used an early 7-2 run to erase any doubt and would go on to capture the win and sweep the season series from UNCW.
Junior
Michela Rucli had 14 kills and a team-high five blocks for the Pride, which also got 14 kills, seven digs and four blocks from Masciullo. Sydney Brock had 15 kills and five blocks for UNCW, while Brynn Montgomery tallied 48 assists and 12 digs for the Seahawks.
Hofstra returns to action on Friday when it hosts Towson at 7 p.m.
NOTES
- Hofstra is now 26-6 all-time against UNCW. The Pride has won three straight against the Seahawks.
- Maring's previous career-high of eight kills last came against Syracuse on September 16.
- Sydlik previously had 17 digs on a pair of occasions, last against LIU Brooklyn on September 1.
- Hofstra is now 4-2 in five-set matches this season.
