Philadelphia, PA – Sophomore
Justin Wright-Foreman had his second straight 30-point game and added six assists, but it was not enough as Drexel drained a three-pointer with 22 seconds left in overtime to give the Dragons an 81-80 victory over the Hofstra Men's Basketball team on Thursday evening at the Daskalaskis Athletic Center.
The loss drops Hofstra's record to 10-12 overall and 2-7 in Colonial Athletic Association play. Drexel improved to 8-13 and 2-6 in league action.
Junior
Rokas Gustys had his eighth double-double of the season with 10 points and 10 rebounds for Hofstra and moved into fourth place all-time in rebounding at Hofstra. He now has 859 to pass Gary Cheslock, who had 857 from 1978-81.
With Hofstra holding an early 13-12 lead, the Dragons would use a 10-0 run to open up a 22-13 lead with 8:48 left in the opening stanza following a Sammy Mojica jumper.
Drexel pushed the first half advantage to 14, 37-23, at the 3:01 mark before Hofstra closed the gap to nine, 38-29, just over a minute later as a pair of free throws from senior
Deron Powers and a layup from junior
Ty Greer got the deficit under double digits.
The Dragons would take the 13-point lead into the break as Rodney Williams beat the first half clock with a three-pointer for the 44-31 lead.
Trailing 55-42 with just over 13 minutes left in the second stanza, Hofstra would mount a serious rally and score 12 straight points to make in a one-point game, 55-54, with 8:51 to play in regulation. Senior
Brian Bernardi was the star during the run as he had seven points during the spurt for the Pride.
Hofstra would complete the rally and knot the score at 58 as Wright-Foreman heated up and hit baskets on two straight possessions to even the score with 6:08 to play.
The Pride would eventually take a 69-68 lead on a Wright-Foreman layup with 55 seconds to play but one free throw from Miles Overton with 30 seconds left in regulation evened the score and sent the game to overtime.
Wright-Foreman would give Hofstra the largest lead by either team in the extra session as he scored with 1:28 left to make it 79-76 in favor of the Pride.
R. Williams answered less than 30 seconds later with a layup and after a free throw from Wright-Foreman with 41 seconds left made it a two-point game, Kurk Lee would win the game for the Dragons with a three-pointer with 21 ticks remaining. Hofstra had several chances on its final possession of the contest but was unable to convert.
Bernardi finished with 14 points, while Powers added 11 points and five assists.
R. Williams led Drexel with 22 points and eight rebounds. Lee added 17, while Mojica chipped in with 16.
