MBB: Late Rally Leads Elon Past Hofstra

Hempstead, NY - Brian Bernardi and Justin Wright-Foreman each scored 20 points, but Elon pulled away late in the game and defeated the Pride, 84-70, at the David S. Mack Sports and Exhibition Complex Saturday evening. The Phoenix outscored the Pride 24-10 over the final eight minutes of the game.

The Pride also got 14 points and four assists from Deron Powers, while Hunter Sabety added a season-high 11 points and tied with Bernardi for team-high honors in rebounds with five.

Hofstra fell to 10-13 on the season, 2-8 in the Colonial Athletic Association with the loss. Elon, which extended its win streak to four games, improved to 14-9 overall and 6-4 in league play.

Hofstra, playing without injured starters Rokas Gustys and Eli Pemberton, kept it close early. The score was tied at 10 four minutes in behind four points from Sabety and three-pointers from Powers and Bernardi. Elon seemed to open up some breathing room with a 24-17 lead after a Brian Dawkins jumper with 11:43 to go. But a 6-0 run capped by a dunk from Wright-Foreman pulled the Pride to within one at 24-23 with 9:55 to play. The Phoenix went on a 7-0 run late in the half to take a 35-27 lead. The Pride whittled the deficit to four, 36-32, on a Jamall Robinson three-pointer, but the Phoenix closed the half on a 5-0 run to take a 41-32 lead at intermission.

Elon went up by 11 to start the second half before the Pride used a 13-4 run to make it a two-point game, 47-45, with 16:06 to play on a three-pointer from Wright-Foreman. The Pride took their first lead since the opening seconds of the game following a three-point play from Bernardi that made the score 50-49 with 13:58 to go. Bernardi pushed the lead to four, 53-49, with a three-pointer with 12:55 to play. Elon responded with a 9-2 run to take a 58-55 lead with 10:33 to play on a layup from Tyler Siebring. But Powers answered right back with a three-pointer to tie the score at 58 with 9:32 remaining.  Leading 71-67 with 5:18 to play, Elon pulled away with a 9-0 run to go up by 13, 80-67, with 2:46 to go. The Pride would not get closer than 12 the rest of the way.

Siebring led all scorers with 23 points and also added six rebounds. Dawkins chipped in 22 points, while Dmitri Thompson added 17 points. Steven Santa Ana was the fourth Phoenix player in double-figures with 10 points and also added six rebounds.
