Philadelphia, Pa. – Despite 19 points from senior
Krystal Luciano, Hofstra Women's Basketball fell on the road, 65-43, to Drexel on Sunday afternoon at the John A. Daskalakis Athletic Center. Hofstra dropped to 8-9 and 1-5 in Colonial Athletic Association play, while Drexel improved to 14-4 and 5-2.
Luciano's 19 tied her season high. Junior
Ashunae Durant led the Pride on the boards, pulling down 11 rebounds.
Drexel finished with three players in double figures, led by Sarah Curran's 17 points. Bailey Greenberg chipped in 12 and Meghan Creighton added 11.
The first quarter was a back-and-forth battle, with neither team leading by more than three until the final minute. Hofstra took its first lead of the day on a jumper by freshman
Marianne Kalin. The Dragons answered with a three-pointer to go up, 7-6, but junior
Ashunae Durant's layup put the Pride back on top. After Drexel had taken a 10-8 lead, Luciano came up with a steal and capitalized on the break to knot the score at 10. The Dragons knocked down a three and drew a foul on a made layup to take a 16-10 lead out of the first quarter, and they would never trail again.
Luciano drained a three to open the second frame and shave the deficit back to three. The Dragons used a pair of free throws, another trey and a layup to take a 23-13 lead before junior
Aleana Leon snapped the Pride's scoreless drought. Luciano got into double figures midway through the quarter with another three, but Meghan Creighton knocked down one of her own to push Drexel's lead to 30-18. Luciano hit another trey in the final minute of the quarter, but a pair of free throws gave the Dragons a 35-21 advantage at the break.
After Drexel took a 39-23 lead early in the third, the Pride held the Dragons scoreless for 2:11. Sara Woods snapped the drought out of the media timeout, but Durant answered with a long-range jumper. The sides traded points for much of the remainder of the quarter before Luciano drained a deep three at the buzzer to cut Drexel's lead to 46-33 heading into the final frame.
Creighton knocked down a pair of threes early in the fourth to continue to increase Drexel's advantage. Amidst a scoreless stretch for the Dragons, freshman
Petja Krupenko drained a right-wing trey to make it 60-42. Tereza Kracikova scored the final five points for Drexel for the 65-43 score line.
The Pride stays on the road for its next game, heading to College of Charleston on Friday for an 11:30 a.m. matchup.
