Charleston, S.C. – Hofstra Women's Basketball suffered a 71-55 loss to College of Charleston on Friday morning at TD Arena. The Pride dropped to 8-10 and 1-6 in Colonial Athletic Association play.
Junior
Ashunae Durant picked up her 11th double-double and fifth game with over 20 points, finishing with 23 points and 16 rebounds. Senior
Sydni Epps also finished in double-figure boards, pulling down 11 rebounds as Hofstra led 51-36 on the glass.
Breanna Bolden became the all-time leading scorer in Charleston program history with 21 points, adding 13 rebounds for a double-double. Dajah Logan also chipped in 12 points as the Cougars improved to 6-13 and 3-5 in CAA play.
The Pride got on the board first, but Charleston answered with six straight points. Epps knocked down a pair of free throws to bring the Pride back within two before Durant hit a long-range jumper to knot it at six about midway through the frame. Bolden gave the Cougars the lead back, but senior
Sandra Dongmo's layup on a pass from Durant quickly evened it again. Dejah Logan hit a three-pointer and popped in a layup to spark a 12-0 run for the Cougars. Durant hit another jumper to snap the streak, but Charleston took a 20-10 lead into the second quarter.
Senior
Krystal Luciano knocked down a three early in the second frame to cut the deficit to 23-15. The teams then traded treys with freshman
Ana Hernandez Gil hitting two and the Cougars going deep for a pair. Luciano hit a mid-range jumper in transition to shave the lead down to eight, but Darien Huff drained another three for Charleston for a 34-23 lead. Durant went 4-for-6 from the free-throw line to get the deficit back to single digits, 34-27, at the half.
After Charleston had pushed the lead to 42-33, Durant went back to the line after she was fouled on a made layup; she made her shot to complete the three-point play and pull the Pride back within eight. The Cougars, however, were quick to answer. Dongmo knocked down a pair of free throws late in the quarter but a final layup gave Charleston a 48-36 advantage heading into the last frame.
Hernandez Gil drained a three to bring it to 54-41 with about 7:30 to go, but a pair of layups helped the Cougars build on their lead. Junior
Olivia Askin had five late points, but it was not enough, as Charleston took the final 71-55 score.
The Pride begins a three-game home stand on Sunday, taking on Elon at 1 p.m. at the David S. Mack Sports and Exhibition Complex. Tickets can be purchased by calling (516) HOF-TIXX or visiting HofstraTickets.com.
