MBB: Hofstra Drops Overtime Heartbreaker To William and Mary

Hempstead, NY - Daniel Dixon's three-pointer at the buzzer in overtime gave William & Mary a 95-93 Colonial Athletic Association victory over Hofstra Monday night at the David S. Mack Sports and Exhibition Complex. Hofstra sophomore Justin Wright-Foreman had a career-best 30 points in the loss.

Hofstra saw it three-game win streak halted and fell to 9-6 overall and 1-1 in the CAA. William & Mary improved to 7-6 overall and 1-1 in league play.

Wright-Foreman was 10-15 from the field and tied his career-best with eight rebounds. Brian Bernardi chipped in 18 points, including the 1,000th point of his Hofstra career, and Powers had 17 points and seven assists. Rokas Gustys posted his sixth double-double of the season with 10 points and 11 rebounds.

William and Mary used an 8-0 run near the midpoint of the first half to snap and 17-17 tie and take a 25-17 lead. But the Pride responded with 10 consecutive points to take a 27-25 lead. Wright-Foreman and Hunter Sabety each had four points in the run. After the Tribe tied the game at 29, the Pride used a 9-0 run to take a 38-29 lead with 7:14 to go in the opening half. Three different players – Eli Pemberton, Wright-Foreman and Jamall Robinson – had three-pointers in the run. The Tribe would score four consecutive points to get within five, 38-33, but a jumper from Bernardi and two free throws from Pemberton pushed the Pride's lead back up to nine, 42-33, and the Tribe would not get closer than five the rest of the half as Hofstra held a 50-44 lead at the half.

The Tribe opened the second half by outscoring the Pride, 12-4, to take a 56-54 lead on a layup from Dixon with 17:18 to play. Hofstra trailed 61-59 before embarking on an 8-2 run to take a 67-63 lead with 13:11 to go. William and Mary would retake the lead, 74-71, on a three-pointer from Justin Pierce with 9:42 remaining. After tying the score at 74 on a free throw from Powers and a layup from Wright-Foreman, the Pride went scoreless for 2:20 as the Tribe extended to a 78-74 lead. Hofstra would pull within one, 80-79, on Wright-Foreman's third three-pointer of the evening with 5:35 to play. Both teams would then go on scoreless droughts of longer than three minutes. William and Mary ended their drought at 3:13 when Omar Prewitt converted a three-point play with 2:44 to go to give the Tribe an 83-79 lead. Powers converted a pair of free throws on Hofstra's next possession to make it a two-point game, 83-81, with 2:29 to go. After a pair of empty trips for William & Mary, Powers put the Pride ahead by one, 84-83, with a three pointer with 1:14 to play.

Dixon answered with a three-pointer on the Tribe's ensuing possession to give William & Mary an 86-84 lead with a minute to play. The Pride took a timeout on its trip up the court and Powers tied the score with a driving layup with 30 seconds to go. The Tribe took a timeout to draw up a final play, but Dixon's shot as time expired was off the mark and the game went to overtime.

It took nearly two minutes of action for the first points of overtime to be scored as Prewitt got a layup to fall over a pair of defenders. But Wright-Foreman tied the game with a pair of free throws and Gustys put the Pride ahead, 89-88, with a free throw with 2:38 to play. The teams traded the lead over the next 1:10 with the Pride holding a 93-92 lead with 1:19 to go. William and Mary got the ball back after a Hofstra turnover with 26 seconds to go and had the chance for a final shot. Greg Malinowski's three with 14 seconds left was off the mark and Wright-Foreman was fouled on the rebound. The sophomore guard missed both free throws and William and Mary had another shot for the win. This time they capitalized on the opportunity as Dixon's three at the buzzer was good.

Dixon's 25 points were a team-high and the senior also added six rebounds and four assists. Prewitt contributed 21 points and seven rebounds, while David Cohn had 11 points and a career-high 12 assists for the Tribe. Justin Pierce was the fourth William & Mary scorer in double-figures with 10 points.
