Hempstead, NY – Sophomore
Justin Wright-Foreman tallied a game-high 25 points for the Pride but three Dukes scored in double-figures to lead James Madison to a 62-54 Colonial Athletic Association victory over Hofstra at the Mack Sports Complex Thursday night.
Hofstra, which dropped its second consecutive conference, slips to 9-7 overall and 1-2 in the CAA. The Dukes, who won their fourth consecutive contest, improved to 5-11 overall and 3-0 in the conference. JMU is 3-0 in CAA play for the first time since the 1994-95 season.
The Dukes were led by Paulius Satkus with 13 points while Jackson Kent added 11 points and Joey McLean chipped in with 10. JMU shot 59 percent (10-17) from the field in the second half to pull away from the Pride and outrebounded the hosts, 35-26.
Wright-Foreman was 8-for-17 from the field including 4-for-9 from the three point line for his 25 points.
Rokas Gustys grabbed a game-high 12 rebounds, his 12th double-figure rebounding game of the year. The Pride hit on just 7-of-25 field goals (28%) in the second half to finish the game with a 35 percent (17-49) shooting percentage.
After splitting the first eight points in the contest, the Dukes went on a 10-2 run to take a 14-6 lead after a Kent jumper. Lukic and Satkus each had four points in the spurt as the Pride had a scoring drought of 4:17.
Wright-Foreman for Hofstra and Kent for JMU exchanged three-pointers over the next four minutes before Wright-Foreman hit two of three free throws and then added a layup in a 36-second span to close to within four at 17-13 with 8:31 to play in the half.
Hofstra then went on another drought from the field, going 4:06 without a field goal, as the Dukes went on a 10-4 run with Dimitrije Cabarkapa's lay-up giving JMU a 27-17 lead with 5:09 to play in the period. But
Brian Bernardi's jumper 44 seconds later started a 9-0 Pride run that closed the deficit to 27-26 after a Pemberton lay-up. Pemberton had five of Hofstra's nine points in the run.
JMU then tallied four of the next five points to boost their lead to 31-27 after a jumper by Satkus at the 1:13 mark. But Hofstra sandwiched a Satkus lay-up with a three-point play by Wright-Foreman and a three-pointer by
Deron Powers as the half ended to knot the score at 33-33 after 20 minutes. Wright-Foreman had 12 for the Pride while Satkus added 12 for the Duke in the first half.
The Dukes came out in the second half and scored the first seven points to open up a 40-33 lead after Kent's three-pointer at the 17:19 mark. But Hofstra came roaring back and tallied the next six points with Powers,
Jamall Robinson and Hunter Saberty notching baskets to close to 40-39 with 15:28 to play.
JMU went on another 7-0 run behind four points from Tom Vodanovich to boost the lead to 47-39 after McLean's jumper. Bernardi ended the run for the Pride with two free throws 40 seconds later before Ivan Lukic hit a lay-up for the Dukes at 11:40 mark to boost the lead to 49-41.
Wright-Foreman hit a three-pointer for the Pride 28 seconds later before JMU went on a 9-3 run over the next 3:41 with consecutive three-pointers from Shakir Brown and McLean boosting the lead to 58-47 with 7:31 to play. Wright-Foreman hit a lay-up almost a minute later to close the deficit to 58-49 but that would be the last points the Pride would score for the next 5:32 as the Dukes would post the 62-54 victory.
Hofstra returns to action on Saturday, January 7 when the Pride travel south to play the Cougars of the College of Charleston at 4 p.m.
